According to pathologyoutlines the number of job postings has been consistently increasing at an approximate rate of about 25% per year since the inception of the jobs portion of the site in 2013. We do not know if this is because more jobs are available or if the site is becoming a more popular venue to post job ads.

For this quarter, there were 218 job postings at PathologyOutlines.com for full time or part time pathologists, which form the basis for the statistics below. This is a 49.3% increase from the 146 job postings in the first quarter of 2017. "

I dont think that total job openings available was ever, even back in the 90s, the entire problem. A big chunk of the problem has been that these jobs basically suck, they are either temporary, involve a revolving door of new lower paid staff every 2 years or otherwise result in permanent slavery.
