I am a very confused high school senior! I have decided I am going to University of Georgia starting in August. Should I take any specific courses my freshman semester? If so, fall or spring? Also, my school does not offer AP Chemistry, and I took Chemistry my Junior year in high school. (By the way, my major is going to be Chemistry as well, or at least I think so.) I don't feel like I remember much from my Chemistry class either. Should I study from a Chemistry book or something this summer to prepare myself for Freshman Chemistry in college? I've heard that Freshman Chemistry is very difficult at UGA. Also also, could I work at a pharmacy, such as at Wal-Mart, CVS, Walgreen's, without having taken any college courses in science? I was wondering if I could do that this summer before going off to college. It would really help me determine whether I wanted to become a pharmacist or not. I do want to become a pharmacist, but I don't know if my strength in Chemistry and other science courses is that good. Please help me by giving me any advice you can. The more, the merrier! 🙂

You should talk to an adviser about classes you should take. Most likely you will take 1-2 sciences with lab, probably bio and chem, plus some gen eds. I'm assuming you probably have to do an orientation this summer before you start school. They should help you pick classes then. Don't worry about not taking AP Chem. The class is intro and they don't expect you to know anything coming in. You should be able to get a pharm tech job, just got to start the search.

Thanks for commenting back, fenix. I do have to attend an orientation this summer, so my advisor should come handy then. And I'm glad to hear I can get a pharm tech job without taking any college courses. I'm going to have to start searching now.

My advice take Gen Chem I this summer at a community college and enroll in Gen Chem II for the fall. This will put you at an advantage with the chemistry sequence of courses and it will give you an idea of if you want to major in chem.

At the very least, take gen chem I, Bio, English 101 or 102, and a humanities course. This should get you on track to completing pre-reqs but not be too overwhelming. HOWEVER, listen to what your adviser says and look at the pre-reqs of the schools you want to go to before taking any advice from this website.

Good luck!

Thanks for the great advice so far! I should have mentioned in my first post that I have completed English 1101, and I'm completing English 1102 now at my community college, which are transferable credits to University of Georgia.

You can work in retail pharmacies (Wal-Mart, CVS, etc) as a pharmacy tech or clerk, although in some places you have to wait to be 18 if you're not already. At the very least, volunteer or shadow at a pharmacy. I started volunteering in a hospital pharmacy when I was in high school. It'll help you figure out if you like the career, and it'll look great on applications.

Good luck👍

Talk to your adviser to make certain, but I would recommend taking at least 2 science classes your first semester, seeing as how you already have the 2 ENG classes knocked out.

If that's the case, you might want to see what math course you can test into. Most pharmacy schools require calculus as a pre-req, so if you need to take pre-calc, it would be good to get it out of the way so that you aren't taking calculus at the same time as organic chemistry and physics.

Im a sophomore at UGA and You should avoid taking two science classes first semester take math (calc, pre-calc, or stat) with gen chem 1 and english and a humanities or other electives like speech com. Get Dr. Atwood for Gen chem 1. The courses for UGA pre-reqs aren't hard if you work your schedule out right and space them out with the RIGHT teacher. Take biol 1 in the spring and ochem 1 with biol 2 your fall second year.

I am 18-years-old, so I guess I can work at a retail pharmacy now. I will probably take Pre-Calc instead of exempting out of it. I slacked off in high school when I took Pre-Calc, and with senioritis this year, I'm slacking off in Calculus. But come college, there's going to be no slacking off. So General Chem 1, Pre-Calc, Speech, and a humanities class or something along those lines will probably be my first semester's classes. Do people generally take about four classes per semester on average?

The amount of classes you take depends on how many credits each one is worth, but you should shoot for around 15 units a semester. Labs throw this off because they are typically one credit, so you won't necessarily be at 15 each semester. Most classes are three credits typically.

Sounds like a good plan. First semester should not be too hard to manage so 12 hours or 14-15 should be good. Make sure you get on ratemyprofessor and also Uga has "the key" from student government association and black tie party which tells you class averages and percentages. Don't get too early classes unless you're a morning person.
