Hi! I need some advice. I went to an out of state university and did very well getting a 3.8 gpa. I also did research on influenza, was secretary of the premed club, and maintained a part time job the two years I attended there. I recently transferred back home due to debt and my father being sick. I am having difficulty adjusting to the university i am attending back home and I am failing. I am going to transfer back to my old school once this semester is over. Here is my problem or where I need input...I am thinking of just telling my old university I took a semester off and not even telling them I attended another university. If the ask why I took it off I will tell them it is because of having to pay my debt off and take car of my dad. I know its not the most honest idea but my friend did it when she did not do well and transferred to a new school and they never knew. When I transfer none of me credits from the new university will transfer and also my grades do not transfer. I was going to just withdraw from my classes but I would lose my financial aid and also owe 2000 to the university and I can't afford to add to my debt. Also I am still working and volunteering af a local hospital here. I just want to know what I should do?

Assuming it's not an "honor" issue, I don't see a problem with failing to mention that you attended another school to your primary university, and I doubt they'd even ask. That you needed to help your ill father is reason enough. Of course, they know how financial aid works, repayment-wise, if you take time off from school.

But be aware that when you apply to med schools, you are obliged to submit a transcript from every post high school institution you attended. So the grades you earn now will count toward your overall application cGPA. Med school application services have ways of knowing where you've attended if you "forget."

You might look into changing your current classes to audit or P/F (even if you fail it's not counted in the med school application GPA, but the F shows up), or Withdrawing from as many classes as possible to put all your efforts a few remaining for a grade.

If I audit my classes how does that look to medical schools? How do medical schools know what universities you attend?

There is a clearinghouse that keeps track of what schools you have attended. Med schools have access to this clearinghouse. I'm sure some undergrad schools do as well. In fact, my transfer school knew I had attended another institution without me telling them (both schools were in the same state).

You should withdraw from your classes now. If you fail multiple classes you can give up on going to an MD school, although D.O. schools would still be an option if you retake them all.

It may seem like a horrible prospect to owe an additional $2000, but that is still much better than never achieving your career goals b/c of a mistake.
