Hi,
I just started a postbac program and was told by everyone that research positions are the best for getting into a good med school.
How do I find it? It seemes impossible to get them unless you're an immediate relative of the director of that division?
How did you guys find your jobs?
And if you know of any openings in NYC area, pleeeeaaaaase PM me.
Thanks

look at Surf programs at your school and see if you're eligible to do that. Look up science professors in specific fields you're interested in and see if they have openings for interns.

If you're willing to work for free, I can guarantee you'll have no trouble finding a lab position. As was mentioned, find PI's you're interested in and e-mail them and tell them about your interest in their work and see if they need any help.

all med schools are good.

make sure you have a well rounded application in addition to the research...that above all is what will help you get into a "good" med school.

try contacting PIs in labs your interested in. even if they don't have a spot, if you write a good letter and submit a clean resume, they might forward your info to someone who does have space.

Someone correct me if I am wrong.....but I was under the impression that for those of us who prefer not to work in a lab environment...(mad respect to those who do....but the many disasters I have had in Bio, Orgo and Chem...tell me...step away from the bench....step far away......also....surgery will not be your cup of tea!!!) .....that clinical research is just as good. I have spent all my time in a clinical research environment and noticed that it seems to get as much respect as a lab based environment???

Or am I just fooling myself so I can feel good!?!?!

There are plenty of research jobs in nyc! I've been through the lab research position-search there successfully already. Google "New York City hospitals" and you'll bring up mt. sinai, columbia, nyu, cornell, rockefeller, sloan-kettering and so many more institutes. Go to their websites, click on the "employment opportunities" (or any link ressembling that), search out the "research positions", and tons will come up. Then send in your cv and resume (BE SURE TO WRITE THE REFERENCE NUMBER FOR THE JOB! or else your resume will never go from the human resources dept. to the dept. that is offering the job you're applying for). To help you even more, try to find a contact email for the job (maybe a secretary in the dept., the current research assistant who's leaving, or even PI) and email them directly. Half of getting a position is making sure they notice you! Dude, I don't where you got this "you have to be connected to some big honcho"...there's plenty of jobs.
When I searched for my replacement, I remember having a friend of mine send out my job description on the Columbia post-bacc mass email list - so maybe you're post-bacc program has some posting or links to jobs.
Research totally looks good on the med school app. It certainly helped me out.
