Hi,

I was recently accepted to the George Washington 7 year BA/MD Program? How is its reputation as a medical school? Why isnt it ranked as a top 50 medical school in the United States? To all current students, please comment in general what your experience has been like while at GW. How is the 2003 matchlist?
Also, it is normal to take both the USMLE Step I and Step II while in medical school.

Thanks for all your help

I am currently in the 7 yr BS/DO program. All i have to do is get a 27 on the next weeks mcat and i get guaranteed admission but i am getting a 26 right now. I am happy with DO because my school is in the top 25 med schools in US. I am not sure about your school.

For my dual degree program:
- Maintain a 3.5 overall and science GPA
- No Cs in any classes
- 27 on mcat

i am a 2nd year student so i maintained my gpa all i need now is the mcat score next week.

do you have any requirements for your program?

Well, considering the fact that there are only 20 D.O. schools total, I sure hope your school would be able to crack the top 25. 😉

Now if you were talking about all MD and DO schools combined, I'd like to know which D.O. school below is in the top 25? $100 says I'm gonna get a primary care ranking.

i was accepted to the gw med program as well and im tryin to make a desicion...did u get into ne others?

Yea, I got into Villanova/Drexel, GW, and Temple/Temple.

I am leaning to GW because of the city and school. Drexel med seemed shady to me, samed with Temple.

Phatsbez, did u reply to GW on April 15? Its so expensive, where are you leaning to?

I was accepted to GW's 7 year program, Thomas Jefferson's, Hahnemann's, NEOUCOM's 6 year program, NJMS', and UMKC's 6 year program. This was a few years ago, and in the end, I narrowed it down to GW and NJMS. I even went to orientation at GW for the undergrad during the summer before beginning undergrad.

I decided to go to NJMS, since I liked the undergrad campus alot and they gave me a full tuition scholarship. To this day, I am thrilled I did not go to GW and blow tons and tons of money on a school that was ranked 89 (?) last year in US News. I mean, anything under 35-40 is pretty much the same anyway.

GW was ridiculously expensive and was charging med school tuition in undergrad with a measly 10 grad scholarship/ year.

I am finishing med school now, and am grateful that I only have a little more the average amount of loans people who go to public school usually have. Having NO undergrad loans is a great thing.

You only go through med school once. You dont want to pay off immense loans because you were trapped in a crappy 7 year program.

Also, it is normal to take step 1 and 2 in med school. Many schools require it and the following classes will also have too pass the OSCE/CSA exam. You need to pass these exams for med school and residency, since you will take step 3 as an intern.

im pretty much tryin to decide between GW and Drexel and GW is maaaaad expensive but then again i dont know about drexel med school...so im kinda stuck

phat,
If you really don't like either program, have you considered not locking yourself into a 7 year program, and just applying after 3 years of undergrad to medical schools you are interested in attending? If you are smart and hard-working enough to get into a 7 year program, you shouldn't have any trouble getting into a med school you will like. kcrd

Dude, go with the cheaper option. Philly will be phun for a few years. You can eat a lot of cheesesteaks and turn in to a fatass!!!

Seriously, they are both the same as far as rep goes. GW may have more name recognition because of the undergrad, but in the med world there ain't no difference prestige-wise between those two schools. It's not like you're picking between Harvard and Drexel. If Drexel is cheaper, then go there. If you do well, you will be able to match just as well from Drexel as you would from GW.

Peace, congrats, and good luck.

Didn't think there would be so many of us GW 7 yr acceptees on SDN, anyway, I just thought it would be appropriate to correct the individual in the NJSM Prog....the GW program fixes the tuition for all 7 yrs. This year's maltriculants will be paying 24,8ish for tuition during the 7 yrs.

To the OP, GW is a decent med school, not Harvard but not Ponce or Ross

The thing is that once you get away from Brown/NW/UoR...the program med schools arent anything special, you're sacrificing not having to take the MCAT, apply the traditional way, for a guaranteed seat...

I've decided to attend the GW program over Union, RPI, Penn State, Stony Brook, IIT/CMS, Sophie Davis, Virginia Commonwealth and a couple of other programs.

When I applied to GW, the tuition was fixed at 19,500 and it was still way too much money.

Currently, you are looking a $173,600 in tuition. This does not include the high cost of living in DC.

From NJMS, I have a grand total of $135,000 in loans after I maxed out all the federal loans.

If you can live at home for GW or have a trust fund, go to GW. I don't know how much Drexel costs.

lets face it....education is expensive.....pick the place where u feel u'll be most happy, provides the opportunities your looking for, cost is a factor among the many....basically GW provides everything im looking for...it may be a lil more expensive but its definitely worth it...and im not worried about paying off my debt....the fancy cars, shoes and crap can wait....im lookin for a good educational experience and to expand my horizons....GDUB WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT!!! yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaah....
