Hello everyone.

I am aiming to go to dentistry school because I really have a strong passion and motivation of becoming a dentist. I love everything about dentistry. My big problem and concern right now is my grades. For my freshman year I took a few math and science classes and finished the two semesters with a 3.6 GPA. After my freshman year, i had to transfer from my private college to a more affordable one. During sophmore year I failed BIO and right now i am not going that well in orgo.I would consider myself an idiot and stupid if the average for the first 2 tests was not a 30/100 in a 50 people classroom. My current GPA is around a 2.5 in the new college. Do i still have any chances? I've been very depressed for a few weeks now.

As long as you can keep your GPA around a 3.3 with a high DAT score and solid ECs you should be fine. Its hard to say this early in the game. But don't get discouraged over one year just pick it up the next.

So your overall GPA is around a 3.0? That isn't all that bad considering you have two more years to increase your GPA. Aim for straight A's the rest of the way, work harder than you thought was possible and it will become habit.

If you truly have strong passion and motivation of becoming a dentist, then there are plenty of opportunities for you getting into dental school. Try as much as you can to keep your mind strong and positive, instead of getting into a depression mode. By staying positive you will need to finish this semester as well as you can. In the next few years, do your absolute best to improve your grades, including maybe retaking some prerequisite courses in which you didn't do well. You will need to consult with your pre-health advisor on that. Get involved in dentistry through volunteering (all types, not only dentistry), shadowing, working as an assistant if you have available time. When the time will come to study for DAT, be very efficient. Allocate specific time to study and take it very seriously. Do well on DAT. When you'll be applying, schools will look at the positive trend in your academic timeline. They will notice a brief hickup this semester, but then will see a strong comeback, supported by a strong DAT score. Your passion and commitment to dentistry will be supported by all the extracurricular activities. You will do well if you're committed to the process and the future career in dentistry. It's all possible - think positive and work hard. Best of luck to you.
