So I have 28 for my MCAT score, and I will currently be applying this June 1st for the 2010 class. I plan on retaking the MCAT in the 2nd week of August in hopes of bumping my score up to a 31/32. I'm not sure if I can do this, and if I am not scoring in the high end 20's by mid-July, then I won't retake my MCAT. I do not want committees to put my application on hold until they receive my new MCAT score, so is it possible to not tell committees that I plan on retaking the MCAT. And in the case that I do retake it, can I just submit my to them (without their prior notice of knowing that I was going to retake it?)

Thank you!!

You should not retake it unless you are scoring in the mid 30's, not in the high end 20's.

I think you should submit all of your materials early and tell them to wait for your new MCAT score. If you don't tell them, then they can reject you before receiving the new score, so what would be the point of retaking it?

There is a check box on the AMCAS application that asked "Do you plan to re-take the MCAT?" If you check yes, the schools will wait on your second set of scores. It's not a big disadvantage as long as you retake the MCAT in early August.

If you don't feel prepared to take the MCAT a second time, please don't. I got a 25 on the MCAT with a 3.7 GPA. I thought about retaking it but I was afraid I'd do worse. DON'T DO WORSE. YOU MUST DO BETTER.

It is still very possible to get in with a 28 if you have a very high GPA. I'm not bragging or anything, but I did receive interviews from Drexel, Jefferson, TCMC, Meharry, Marshall, and a few other MD schools that I'm blanking on right now. So, make a wise decision and don't blindly walk into another MCAT.

I would definitely retake it, but study hard and get new practice materials.

agreed

I agree with the above as well; if you are not scoring above 31/32 do not retake. Practice away, because without a high GPA you are going to be a below average applicant. It is already competitive enough; you do not want to have to worry about sub average MCAT.

i would say apply with what you have now. if by the time of application submisson you are not breaking a 30, then I would not check out the "MCAT retake" choice and take my shot with the 28. after all, ppl have gotten into US MD schools with 28's...

What is your MCAT breakdown?? I don't think a 28 is bad at all, enough to get you interviews for sure.
