Hello! I joined this site to hopefully gain some insight about a decision that I have to make by the end of this week. I was accepted into two osteopathic schools--Midwestern University in Arizona and Touro University in Nevada. I loved the campus at Midwestern but that school isn't affiliated with its own hospitals and I worry about the rotations my last two years. I don't want to limit myself to only to primary care rotations. I really loved the campus though. Touro University on the other hand is affiliated with many hospitals in the area. The campus isn't as impressive and it is a newer school. Any insight into what I should do? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

first of all affilation of a school to a hospital is not what makes you get in to the competetive residencies...it's simply YOU and how much you will bust your butt diring med school and on your boards.
As far as i know CCOM is very good in getting you the rotations in Chicagoland area ...and there is so many great, top hospitals here. As far as i know it is not a big problem to get great rotations especially if you rock your boards. I mean if Caribbean students can get their own rotations you will have no problem either.
But try to also think of other aspects about the schools and what you really want to get out of it. WHere did you feel better etc.
If i were you hands down i would choose CCOM...but i am biased like i said before.
Good luck:luck:

Um ... CCOM isn't one of the two schools she is trying to decide between. 😕 😕 😕

CCOM is not one of the choices. LOL. You need to relax a bit, everybody on here knows you are going to CCOM for sure.

Remember it is only four years and the aesthetics of the campus do not automatically equate to a quality education. If I were you, I would go with Touro because of the greater number of available hospital affiliations. As for the fact that it is a newer school, I am the wrong person to ask about that because I am planning on going to DCOM. 😉 Good luck with whatever you decide.😀 :luck:

Compare the board passing rate from both of the schools, compare the residency placement from both of the school and then make the final decision.

ooops...i didn't see Arizona after Midwestern LOL.
This is what you get for sleeping 3 hours and doing physics problems all day right after writing an orgo exam:laugh:
I need some caribou coffee.

Now this makes a choice a little harder.....
I think at this point it's more of personal preference then anything else.
Both schools are great. I admit it's a hard one...i wish i could give you any advice but i never visited either of them so cannot tell you anything.

If everything else fails you can always flip a coin😀

I concur with DoctorMom. I consider clinical exposure more important than book learning. I would not care much about the campus features.

I had to make the same decision, KatieBeth; Touro-NV and AZCOM were my top choices. Ultimately I chose AZCOM for a variety of reasons and am no longer worried about the rotation years after reading many, many recent posts from students and recent grads there who say the rotation system has made a 360 since earlier years. I hear that all rotations (except for a four-week rural rotation) can be done in the Phoenix area, which was important to me because I'll be married by that time and don't want to schlep all over creation. There are a gazillion hospitals in the area and the U of A no longer has a "monopoly" on rotations since a state mandate went into effect a few years ago. So AZCOM students are in much better shape than they were in years past, rotations-wise.

The board pass scores are unmatched by any other school; AZCOM is at 100%, compared to TUCOM's 87% from this past year (don't quote me on any of this, but it's what I've read). Grads are matching into Mayo, Hopkins, and other highly competitive residency spots, in many different fields (certainly not just primary care).

The patient population is hard to beat in terms of diversity, another important factor to me; I also like the fact that there are other professional programs at AZCOM, including podiatry, nurse anesthesiology, perfusion, and even a dental school is opening up. I think this will make for a well-rounded education.

I really loved the atmosphere at both places, and it was a pretty difficult decision for me, so I hear you! There are actually a lot of posts, if you use the search function, about choosing between Nevada and Arizona...just type in AZCOM and they should all pop up.

Best of luck in making your decision...

Hey there!

Congrats again on your acceptances! I also got accepted to both the schools you did and I agree it was a tough decision. I think both will give you an excellent education. Ultimately, I chose AZCOM because I really think they prepare students well for the boards. At the interview, we were told they have the highest passing rate for the last 5+? years. In terms of clinical education, I remember being worried about the lack of connections but I think that was a problem that has been resolved as there was a Bill that was passed last summer that does not allow any medical schools within the state of AZ to block other institutions from rotating at any of their sites. So I believe by the time we start our rotations, things should be better. You should do a search for azcom rotations because I think someone posted an article describing this. But again, this is a hard decision so good luck!:luck:

Glad so many premeds are so well versed on what is important in medical education. 🙄

Go to the school that gave you the better first impression.

Personally I would chose Las Vegas. I know many of the profs & deans out there.

Although clinical education is important you have electives to do that will showcase a wide variety of things you may not be exposed to in the core rotations of a particular school.

Strong hospital affiliation is always nice but unless you are planning on post graduate training at one of those affiliates it doesnt mean a whole lot.

Campus asthetics IS important...its where you will be spending every day for at least 2 years. Thats why NYCOM was off my list from the beginning.

So again...go with the school that gave you the best impression overall.

Personally I feel that quality of medical education is multifactorial and not centered around clinical education.

And thats the opinion from someone who has actually been in medical school.

👍

Just curious, where do you go to med school ?

As mentioned above, AZCOM has an exceptionally high board pass rate. Glendale is a great neighborhood. Phx is a nice rapidly growing city. Plus the fact that it's only a 3.5 hour drive or so to be sitting on a Mexican beach drinking margeritas...

Thanks for all your help. I really do appreciate everyone taking some time to help me out. I am still confused but have some new things to check out. I will let you know what I decide in the end.

I would choose AZCOM over TUCOM-NV in a heart beat. Why? AZCOM is more established, has a great reputation with 100% pass rates on the boards and superior rotations in 3rd/4th year. At AZCOM you get the opportunity to rotate at the major allopathic hospitals such as Maricopa, Banner Good Sam, University of Arizona, Phoenix Childrens. Also, check out their match lists...they have turned out very solid matches in the past few years. If you do not have any personal preferences for location/feel of each school you should definitely choose AZCOM...just my opinion. Personally, if I did not get accepted to TCOM I would have most likely taken AZCOM as a close second. Good luck in your decision!
