I am wondering if it is too late to apply to DO schools for 2007? I see some schools have deadlines in spring but I was wondering if the classes would be filled up by now.

My mcat is a 25 and postbac gpa 3.53, is it good enough to apply with or I shouldn't even bother? Thanks in advance for any help.

If you have not even completed the primary AACOMAS application, then I would say hold off until the next cycle.

Yeah at this point, it's likely you won't get into competitive programs.

Of course, you could still try but by the time you are complete, they might have scheduled interviews through to the end... did you apply MD prior to this and decide the DO is your backup?

Thanks guys for the help. I appreciate any help I can get.

I have applied to MD school, but with my mcat it doesn't look like its going to happen. I saw that some school like Western, TUCOM and LECOM have deadlines in April and May. These deadlines to me seem far enough that I may have a chance in getting in, or am I missing something here? If I finish my primary this week and send it out, would it still be too late? I looked online and it doesn't seem to difficult to fill out the primary app., doesn't it take a long time for my app to be verified?(I know my amcas took 4 weeks).

Once again, thanks for the help

It will take a while to get your AACOMAS verified at this point; you're looking at 4-6 weeks. Also, don't forget about secondaries. Currently, from what I gather from other posts, people are having interviews scheduled in February and some even in March. If you were complete ASAP you're looking to interview in late March or April. April is generally the last month for interviews and those are basically wait-list candidates. If you are dying to attend medical school this summer, then apply and see what happens. I would try applying to some of the newer schools if this is the case, as they are slighly less competitive.
I'll also emphasize that if you have no idea what osteopathic medicine is all about and have no interest in OMM and OPP, then don't apply. This is the time in the application cycle when the MD-rejection detection systems are at their peak. Good luck.

yeah it takes about the same time as AMCAS, about 4 weeks min. (sometimes quicker, but I wouldnt bank on it). At this point it would be mid-jan (maybe later) before completely verified and after that the secondaries, letters, etc have to be sent in. If you want to get into the competative programs then I would wait and apply early 2008 (right when AACOMAS comes out to be sent it for the fall 08 cycle). That would give you good chances of acceptance. But if you want to spend the money for this cycle late, then go ahead and try (If there is some circumstance that would make you really want to apply for fall 07). Then again, if their deadlines are in April or May (Is that the deadline for everything? The primary application deadline might be earlier Im not sure) then you can get all of your materials in before that time, just do it as soon as possible. But you chances are reduced and you would have a lot better chance applying for fall 2008 simply because by the time you are finished the schools will be filling up those final spots. But you never know people have been accepted a day before classes start so you never know. Good Luck!

The primary is not difficult, but it is time consuming because you have to put in all your grades just like you do on AMCAS. I would definitely advise you to wait, unless you want to apply to that Touro-NY school. 😉 I don't think anyone else wants to come up with the money for the $200 secondary, plus they just started accepting applications recently so their deadlines are much later. GOOD LUCK!:luck: 😀

Have you shadowed a DO?

Do you have a letter of recommendation from a DO?

If the answer is no to the above questions, you probably don't have good odds at a number of the schools you just mentioned. Many schools REQUIRE a DO letter of recommendation for your application to be considered.

I'd hold off until next year. There are plenty of great schools that will consider your application without a DO LOR (I didn't have one).

OP, not to be unkind, but a 25 MCAT isn't very competitive for any allopathic school that I know of. And since you're in a post-bacc, I have to assume your undergraduate GPA wasn't stellar. I'm just curious. What MD schools did you think you had a shot at with your stats?

yeah i guess if you can hold off till next cycle. people are alreadt accepted for the 2007 year. so you can wait till the next cycle but apply early. i would say if its possible do your AACOMAS primary now and save it that way when it time the second cycle comes around all you really need to do is just hit the submit button. i have most of my grades up on the application already and im not applying for another two years. call me whatever i was bored😀

I can't help to wonder what will happend, so I am going to apply to a limited number of schools, especially the ones with an april/may deadline. Besides I have searched here on SDN and have found post of people apply in feb/march and getting in.

I guess it won't hurt to apply.

Thanks for all the help guys!!!!!

Well, good luck then! Just don't tell them you applied because you didn't get into MD schools. Also, make sure you have a good understanding of osteopathic medicine because if you are interviewed, they will ask.:luck: 😀

Ok then.

Good luck.

I would advise reading through this when selecting your schools and applying in general.

I just got a c- in human anatomy, will this really hurt my chances of getting into a DO or MD school? Should I retake it? I am junior and my GPA is about a 3.37. My freshman year grades were horrible too, I had 2.5. I raised it to a 3.6 then last semester it went to a 3.37. I still have to take orgo and physics and calculus. If I do well in all of these courses will that c- and the freshman grades be forgiven?

Definitely apply if money is not an issue, but assuming you have all the necessary letters ready to go....25 is a solid score for osteopathic schools, 27and above is ideal but 25 is good....at this point, I'd use this application to kind of test the waters and see how competitive you are because if you get interviews this late in the cycle, then most likely you will get interviews next year early in the cycle in my opinion...your chances of being on the alternate list is greater than directly admitted, but you never know....with applying now you have a chance of attending med school in the fall vs. not applying...best of luck to you!

Anytime if you can retake a science course to improve your GPA, you should seize the oppurtunity. If you cannot, then concentrate on doing well on any science courses you will be taking. The average GPA for incoming students varies school to school, but as long as its 3.3 at least, you are fine, but the higher the GPA the more competitive you become.

Gook Luck!
