Hey guys,

I'm asking this question on behalf of a close friend and would truly appreciate it if you could provide some feedback : ) I'm actually med, so I only know whats pertinent for medical school (research, clinical, leadership, service clinicals, MCAT, blah blah blah) and am useless to her.

How competitive is it to get accepted into Boston University OT program? I see it is ranked #1, which made her very nervous (she wants to go to BU for family). We looked for average stats and GRE score, but came empty handed. Any info would be GREATLY appreciated, and would sprinkle good karma your way 😍

Would a 3.4 at a competitive UC school, 3.4 pre-req science, and a 1320 GRE equivalent plus boat loads of leadership and 100 hours of shadowing = good chance?

Try using this link, it should take you to the current program profile of BU. I pulled it from the OTCAS website. (Occupational Therapy Centralized Application System) If the link doesn't work I can find a better way to post it.
http://www.aota.org/OTCAS/Boston-University.aspx

Your friend should consider creating an OTCAS account although she can't work on her application until the new cycle opens on July 6th... But she could have a look around and learn more info. Once your friend creates a username and password for OTCAS she can look at a link (on the lower left) that lists participating programs. Most of the programs that participate with OTCAS have a program profile such as this. What information the school gives can vary slightly, but it looks like Boston Unv. lists their minimum GRE scores (500v 500q 4.5a) as well as what their average GPA (3.6) was from the last class to come in.

Since their deadline was back in January she could email the school and ask them questions regarding what she needs to do to become more competitive in one area or another. I've found most schools tend to be receptive to these questions. Plus she is getting into the game early for the 2012-2013 application cycle.
To be honest I don't recall seeing any threads on this forum about Boston University, but someone in region may have gone to an orientation and might have more information.

I just got my rejection letter today from BU. I had an 3.86 GPA and had a 158 verbal and 149 quantitative on the new GRE scale, if that helps.

Hey mgilmore, out of curiosity, how did you receive your letter? Email or snail mail? I applied and haven't heard anything back but I'm also currently home for Spring break so I haven't checked my mail... so I'm just curious?

Hi FlipFlops,

I received mine via snail mail. I hope you receive good news soon 🙂

Seriously, thank you all so much for your feedback! The link was especially helpful, so GOOD KARMA SHOUTOUT to gymnaustau 😍😍😍

Advanced healthcare programs are disgustingly competitive...

I'm sorry about the rejection mgilmore, if it means anything, your stats are incredibly impressive, and I appreciate you sharing that with me.

pre-OT students rox!

No problem, mipp0 🙂 best of luck to your friend!

Petersons.com shows it as accepting 41%, which generally I don't consider extremely selective (almost half the applicants are accepted.) However, where we're talking about the top program, we're talking about many top-notch applicants. So, it's 41% of a pretty strong candidate pool. (That's different from 41% of a pool of "average" applicants, obviously.) But, do we know how BU selects applicants? Some schools do it almost straight with a formula, weighing each element. Others are much more flexible.

You can search BU - it's been mentioned, at least in passing, although surprisingly few of the New England schools have dedicated threads.

Thanks! I actually already got into my top school so while I don't want to be rejected (no one ever does), I was more asking because I just want to know...

Lizzo, you should know that that information of 41% acceptance is probably outdated. Not sure where you are in your application process, but thought you should know! For example, UIC had over 500 applications for less than 40 slots this year, but that website says they have an acceptance rate of 60% which is obviously no longer true.

Crazy stuff. It looks like OT schools have become extremely competitive very suddenly. I wonder when they'll start raising the pre-req requirements?
