I know that thre is a Past-Bacc thread that has a lot of information on SMPs and Post Bacc programs but I am finding that nearly 75% of the programs mentioned are geared towards pre-med students.

I know that many of you are in masters programs or have taken one to improve your application.

What schools have you gone to and what program? Was your program non-thesis? one year or two year? Did you get a tuition waiver and/or stipdend? If not, how much was your program?

ANY information would help. I am able to enroll in either a 1 or 2 year program because of my time frame.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE respond with any info.

Thanks in advance!

I'm not currently in a MS program but from what I have seen, alot of them take pre-dents even if they don't advertise as such. Browse their websites and if it's not clear they accept pre-dents, I would contact them.

I assume from your username you're in Miami? Some FL post-bacs are Barry, Nova, and USF:

Of course there are many others, just depends on what you are looking for.

most, if not all, take pre-dents as well (same track as pre-meds, for the most part). plus, they make more money by not being exclusive to accepting only pre-med students.
there are plenty of schools, just research. barry, boston u, umdnj, some more in chicago area, FL.....just look. some are thesis, some are non-thesis, depends where you want to go. most are 1 year, but they allow for 2 years (especially those that have a job, are spending more time on thesis, etc.). at umdnj, its ~$16k for the whole program, in-state (i think there is a waiver if you're out of state). i think boston is real expensive, like $30k something.

Excellent.

The reason I ask is because programs like Loyola Chicago and Drexel have specifically said they really only accept pre-medical students because their program is geared to include MCAT studying and doctor rotations, etc.

I'm an environmental health science master's student at the University of Georgia. It's a 2-year, thesis based program. I chose it because the topic interested me, which was important to think about just in case dental school didn't work out for me.

My courses are health science based (toxicology, etc.) and my thesis was partnered with the CDC, with a monthly stipend of $1200.

I was accepted to 3 dental schools this year. All interviewers were impressed with my master's work and asked detailed questions about my thesis project. I would definitely recommend this route if you're having trouble being accepted to schools, which was my case.

Good luck!

Chaseithall,

That sounds very interesting actually! Are you a Georgia resident? Do you know if they will accept the DAT in place of the GRE? I would love to hear any further information if you happen to have it.

Thanks in advance!@

So many people have helped me out on this site throughout the years and its time for me to give back. So, here goes:
I would recommend looking into the Florida Atlantic University Master of Biomedical Science program. I graduated from undergrad with a 3.0. Before beginning the program at FAU I took 3 semesters of post bacc classes, busted my A$$, and finished with a 4.0. This bumped me to about a 3.25. I then enrolled in the FAU MS and completed my first semester with another 4.0. I applied to 8 schools, got interview invites to 6 of them and was accepted to 4 and waitlisted at one. DAT was 19/19/19. I think this is a good indication of the success of this program and I truly believe I would not have had any acceptances if I was not doing the masters.
About the FAU MS:
Its quite new - only been around for about 5 years. Cost is about $9,000 total for in state but Im not sure for out of state. Its associated with the University of Miami medical school which has a satellite building on the FAU Boca campus. Most of the MS classes are taken in that building. It usually takes most people 2 years to complete but it can be done in one year if you push yourself (im doing it in one year). 30 credits, or about 10 classes are needed to graduate. There are both thesis and non-thesis options but the thesis option will almost definitely take 2 years to complete (Im non-thesis). In the past they have offered gross anatomy but it appears as though they are not going to be offering it this year due to budget cuts, and believe it or not, cadaver shortages in south FL! I dont think the program is as clinically helpful as some other programs such as Barry. I do however feel that after having gone through the program I am better prepared and have a hugely broad and diverse background that will help me through dent school. Most importantly for me though, is that the program has allowed me to practice and improve my study skills which was my main issue throughout undergrad...

Hope this helps. PM me if you have more questions...

That is very interesting! Although my name is "MiamiDent" I am actually from Miami of Ohio, not Miami Florida. However, I have been looking into some florida schools because of my ability to live with family down there (much cheaper).

I will most definitely look into this program and add it to my list. I greatly appreciate your honesty as I believe I am in a VERY similar situation.

Thanks again!
