My application is verified and MCAT scores were just submitted. I submitted to a throwaway school and chose William Carey as the throwaway but now I need to add the schools I would actually want to attend. I have 36 schools on this list, and I think it is way too many but not sure which ones to take our or what number would even be good to apply to. Please help me narrow down this list, so that I can send in my primary to the schools

cgpa = 3.49
sgpa = 3.38
MCAT = 506 (125/127/126/128)

Would get rid of...
MSU - instate bias and high OOS tuition
Ohio - regionally bias and contracted to stay and work in Ohio for 5 years
ICOM, ARCOM, NYITCOM in Arkansas - new new schools and your stats are better than that
LECOM in Brandenton - apparently thier rotations are a mess
Nova - thier test rates are dropping which is alarming

Would probably apply to all the others as long as you got the dough for it...
Goro's list is pretty on point

Good luck!

It depends on how is your rest of the app. If your EC is good I'm sure you will get into one of the these 6 schools if you would like to stay close to home.

  • touro university california
  • western university school of osteopathic medicine pomona
  • touro university nevada
  • A.T. Still University - School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona
  • Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine of Midwestern University
  • Western University of Health Sciences/College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific Northwest

All the best!!!

I suspect DO schools are mostly lumped together when you're applying to ACGME residencies, so it's more about attending a school that fits your geographical interests, budget, desired education, etc. No one can really advise you on much since you didn't mention anything that you're looking for.

When I interviewed, I absolutely did not like Western (CA or OR). Both schools were a very negative experience for me, so I would never recommend them. But if remaining in CA is high up on your list of wants, for example, then that doesn't really apply to you. So, my advice is to look at all of the schools on that list, determine which ones you would really prefer not to go to, and then apply to the rest. Make sure you apply to 10ish schools and you'll have a solid shot somewhere.

This is true is a sense, but not all DO schools are created equal. There are some that offer a lot more opportunities to their students than others, and those opportunities can make a difference in your residency application.

This definitely is PD-dependent (bad clinical rotations at some schools ruin it for everyone); but others are regionally favorable. ie, the PDs know the products of these schools and are Ok with them (example, PDs in the midwest will favor grads of KCU and OKCOM, but pass on UNECOM or PacNW).

What caused your negative experience at the two Western schools?
