Hi. I just got my USC acceptance today but I got accepted into UOP back in December, 2004. I paid my registration for UOP but that doesn't matter too much. I didn't think I was going to get into USC but I guess I was wrong.

Please offer some advice in terms which school would be better. I don't plan on doing retail. I am interested in other areas such as compounding, clinical pharmacy, direct patient care, rather than dispensing. Please help. Thank you all in advance!

Mike

I have a friend who goes to UOP. She loves it.

Hi. Sorry to be posting here since I'm not technically a pharm student yet but I have a big dilemma and I need your help.

USC has a better football program. Though, USC headcoach Pete Carrol went to UOP. Go to SC... has better looking people..

Come on guys...i'm talking about academically. I don't want to stay in la longer than i have to. I had friends that went to stockton and they didnt like it too much. I know there are better looking people in LA but that won't be a good enough drive for me to go there, besides most of them are fake...in terms of plastic fake...so some read advice please!!!

Ok..your pleade for real info is genuine.. so here is my 2 cents..

USC invented PharmD program. Does that count? You bet. USC has great 4th year rotations. Of course, you can get through UOP in 3 years..right? But I believe tuitions are about the same. That being said..

Historically..UCSF and USC's Ca RX board passing rate were usually above 85%... with UOP student's passing rate being significantly lower...around 60 to 70% every year..with Western having the lowest passing rate.

Does that mean USC and UCSF provide better education or does it simply mean that the quality of students are better at USC and UCSF? Who knows...

Does this even matter now that Ca board uses Nabplex..

But I can tell you...that my 4th year rotations at USC were phenomenal...except for the "community" rotation..

IBTM (in before the move) :meanie:

When I was comparing the two schools I felt that USC offered more diverse opportunities and experiences outside the retail field than UOP. Try comparing the clerkships and residency programs for the two schools - it'll give you a better idea..

BTW, I was offended by your comment about LA folks................ but I'll keep my mouth shut 😎

check over in the prepharm forum.. this is more of their area than ours

Congrats on your acceptances! Both schools will prepare you well for clinical pharmacy. You may want to think about the location (Stockton vs LA), cost of housing, 3 vs 4 years, summer or no summers off, etc. Goodluck 👍

Don't worry I got fake boobs too...just got them in yesterday! J/k...I'm
sorry if I had offended you. I haven't been to LA in over 10 years so the
info I get is always through second or third person. Sorry!

Thank you to both for the information. How would go about searching and
comparing the clerkships and residency information for both schools?

If anyone else has any more info comparing both schools, please let me
know..Thanks.

Well i figure you guys are already pharm D students, this will give a better insight then at the other forum. I posted there too but I guess I'm just having a hard dilemma because people tell me usc is a better school and based on test scores and board passing rates, it might be true. I want to come back and work in the bay area and i heard usc has a lot of connections and big networks.

Uh so hard...

Congrats Minghoo!

This website is a recent statistical performance of UOP, WesternU, and USC students who took the board exams. It's showing that UOP and WesternU did better than USC. If your talking about the most recent statistics, then UOP is better. RIght? Co'z I'm not really sure how relialbe is the website.

If I have a choice between USC and UOP, I would choice USC since its closer to home, save money, school has a lot of research opportunities (which is your interest), and school's reputation. In your case, it might be smarter to take UOP since you hate LA, its closer to your house, cheaper, and only three years program (3rd as your rotation). Plus, it will benefit me if you don't take the offer since I'm on the "active consideration list", hahahaha.

Either USC or UOP, you're going to be fine. It's really all up to you how successfull you want to be in the future. A school name will help out, but its really all about the effort of an individual. Good luck and please don't waste your money if you will not go to USC (you can do a lot of things with $500).

If you really think 90.7% vs. 92.2% passage rate on the law portion of the exam is significant then you are right UOP is better. Both schools had 100% passage rate on the Naplex. The Naplex is pretty much a joke.

I don't think that UOP is "significantly" better than USC in terms of their passing rate, but the stats showed UOP did better. I think that one of the reason why people will say USC is better is due to their reputation, but this might be the historical reputation (such as their stats from the past). I just hope that Minghoo doesnt make a decision based on school's name

Oh don't worry I'm not making my decision based on there cuz honestly school name doesn't really matter to me because I know both schools have their own reputation. I've talked to alumni from both schools and got their opinion but so far SC has more to offer me in terms of what I want to do with my degree. Like I said I want to go into clinical pharmacy and SC is very clinically based and UOP is more retail based. And SC is in a big city and i like the city better than the towns. And I have a lot of discipline in terms of studying with distractions.

We'll see..

I was referring to whether the percent passage rate is even statistically significant.

Mike....

First of all Congrats on getting into USC. Now as for your question... UOP vs. USC. Well... here's the low down. USC teaches your "pharmacy" earlier on in school. SC is one of the few schools that have a first year externship program. During your first year, you are ceritified to administer immunization shot ( eg flu shots , Hep B, TB...etc) and you practice giving shots at local pharmacies or at health fairs. You are also trained in many disease states such as hypertension, diabetes, cholesterol ... During your second year, you have IV rotations. USC is the only school in california that provides you this training!!! And it is up to date to the current government safety standards. During your fourth year you have some awesome clerkship rotations. USC is one of the few school that allow students to travel abroad (japan, hong kong, europe...) and out of state to do your clerkship. Not to mention the various dual degree programs offered PharmD/MBA, PharmD/JD PharmD/MPH etc... USC has also been around for 100yrs!!!!!! and has a great alumni network that actually care about you!!! (i got many job offers from SC alumni ). USC provides student with awesome academic opportunites/experiences not available at other schools.

Now the discussion about the passing rate.... i have to agree with BMB... i doubt the 2.7% is statistically significant. If you want to play with numbers... you can always say... at USC only 5 failed while at UOP 8 failed... that changes how you read things.

But honestly.... if you're lookings just based on academics... both schools will get you your pharm.d and you will pass the board exam. The bigger question is... what do you want to get out of pharmacy school? I think USC will give you a better experience. But you have to ultimately decide which school will make you happier.

PM if you have any more questions!!

Hi

I just got my USC acceptance yesterday. I am debating whether or not I should go there this coming Fall. At the interview, I didn't get to tour the facility at USC. Can any current student tell me about the lecture hall, lab, computer lab...etc? wireless?

Also, do you spend more than the estimated expenses every year? I think it's about 46000 per academic year.

Thanks a lot 🙂

Well, what are all your options? What other schools are you choosing from, besides USC?

By the way, I don't have any pharmacy related experience. Do most USC pharm students have previous experiences? Just curious...

I love the idea of three year programs, but compared with USC it would be a tough call. USC is very well respected and they always say that they top the list when it comes to "networking". I am only applying to three year programs next year, but if I had the choice I would pick USC all the way! 😍
