Hi everyone. U guys really have a lot of knowledge, so i'm counting on you all to give me some realistic advice here:
step 1: 207/84
med school: SUNY Buffalo
class rank: middle 3rd
Honors in Neuroscience, ENT, HP in several others(including surgery), Pass in rest
Looking to match in NYC
I have a very SOLID LOR from a prominent well known anesthesiologist, and am doing clinical research w/ him. additionally, I am doing electives at MSSM, St. Vincents, NYU.

What do u guys think? What can i realistically expect w/ this record

Dude,
just do some rotations at the places you want to go to. From this past years scramble, I remember quite a few New York city programs open. Just make sure you have a good backup plan just in case this year turns out to be a competitive year in NYC.

Dude, didn't NYU not fill this year? I think you'll get in there no problem.

Both Cornell and NYU did not fill, but I think this was through choice and not lack of applicants. As far as your step 1 score of 207, I have several friends who are starting their CA-1 year in 2005 at Programs in NYC with similar step scores. With your overall package I realistically think you'll match at one of your choices in NYC. So don't sweat it and have a good time in the interview process.

I know from experience that there is one NYC program that will take some applicants out to dinner but not others, solely based on Step I scores. Also, I feel that for all fields, NYC is always a little more competitive. But the characteristics of many people that want to do gas (many are ethnic, young, lifestyle/reimbursement oriented, prefer the interpersonal interactions they have outside of work to the interpersonal interactions they have with patients), makes NYC an even more sought after place to do gas.

I think your scores may preclude you from columbia, cornell, and maybe sinai...people say (rumor) that NYU is a place where people go that would have prefered to match into another program or specialty and are less happy. also, many were former surgeons. because most residents try to convince themselves (and ergo you) that they are happy even if they are not (as a psychological defense mechanism), places with that kind of vibe are really hard to get a handle in.
my interview day at NYU, you only had five minutes with one interviewer, so i imagine they are very numbers oriented.

i know i'm not painting the rosiest picture, so i hope i'm wrong. best of luck...if you want a place in the city, you'll get one, it just might be in a place where you'll have to work a lot harder (but then you'll be better trained).

last pice of advice: make sure you get a REAL GOOD handle on the st luke's call schedule before you consider it.
