hi every one,please help me iam old img with usmle step2 6 attempts ,i failed with 1or 2 points only all the time,now iam really depressed ,even if i pass my chance of getting residency is very less,any state is providing residency more than 6 attempts, iam really sad ,i dont know what to do,please what i should i do,whether i should take the exam o not?or i should try some medical related feild,i feel like crying ,please advice and help me, god will help you,this forum is really helping others in many ways,i feel ill be getting solution for my problem,i dont want to go out of the medical feild,please help

You're in a very tough situation, and you might have to be realistic and face the fact that even if you pass Step 2 in your 7th attempt and secure a residency (very unlikely), you will not be able to obtain a license to practice medicine in many states in the US.

Many State Medical Boards place limits on how many attempts you're allowed to pass the USMLE, and some place a limit on how many years total you're allowed to pass all three Steps of the USMLE. Refer to this link:

If you're willing to work in those states that have no time or attempt limits, then your biggest hurdle would be to pass Steps 2 and 3 and obtain a residency spot.

It is highly, HIGHLY unlikely that you will find a residency position after so many attempts. You also stated that you are an "old img". How long has it been since you graduated medical school? and what have you been doing since graduation? It sounds to me (from your writing style), that you are not from the U.S. Do you need a visa to work in the U.S? Do you have any U.S. clinical experience? How did you do on Step 1? Did you pass it on your first attempt?

All these factors (being "old", IMG, multiple attempts on USMLE, visa issues, lack of U.S. clinical experience) all put together make it IMPOSSIBLE for you to match anywhere. There are many IMG's (recent graduates, who are U.S citizens and have U.S. clinical experience) who are having difficulty matching because of even ONE failure on the USMLE.

I recommend you should give up on getting a residency in the U.S. and try to do something else.

Why do you not try to become certified to practice medicine in another country? As others have said, you are going to be hard-pressed now to make it into a residency here. After trying 6 times, I have to think that you know the medicine. Judging from your post here, could an understanding of English be limiting you? If that is the case, then practicing medicine in a country where your primary language is spoken might be easier both practically and personally. I understand that as a foreign medical graduate, obtaining a US residency is seen as a wonderful training opportunity, but healthcare is needed worldwide, not just in the US, and there are fine doctors worldwide with whom you could train.

First of all, it's not "impossible" for you to get into a residency but it is an uphill battle. Your first task is to pass Step II (both parts) and that should be your goal period. After that, you need to pass Step III (ace this test). Then, you need to look into getting an observership here. There are loads of websites that can assist you with this. Armed with an excellent performance in an observership and some contacts which, you should be working on while you are in observership, then you have an outside chance. Also, beware that many states have a seven year limit on passing USMLE (all steps). Be sure that you are not hitting this problem or problems in terms of the number of attempts on any step.

Make no mistake, you have an uphill battle (like climbing Mt Everest) but it's been done before. The person who can be of most help to you IS YOU. You have to figure out how to pass Step II and don't keep taking this test unless you do something significantly different in terms of prep.

Can you get in touch with some of your countrymen (women) who have been successful and get some assistance from them in your own language? Can you significantly upgrade your English skills (which I suspect is your problem)? Can you find some contacts here who are willing to offer you an observership while you are working on completing all steps of USMLE?

Finally, practicing in this country is not the "end all" of the practice of medicine. Certainly, you should be able to practice in your own country for a while until you get your skills upgraded.

You won't be interviewed by Harvard, but there are tons of programs that perhaps may be seen as less desirous (especially in primary care), that go unfilled year after year after year.

You can't be too choosy, but the key is to get into the system, and once in, then decide what your next step should be.

Concerning observerships, First Aid For Step 2CS lists a number of hospitals that allow observerships. But first things first: get the exams out of the way. Then get the letters showing American clinical experience.

I'm not disagreeing with you Nu. However, I have read lately that even those primary care spots are becoming increasingly difficult to get.

Perhaps having something to do with increase in graduating AMGs and massive influx of FMGs from the UK and elsewhere in the past couple of years.

As suggested earlier, I think the OPs best bet is to finally pass Step II, nail Step 3 and even more importantly MAKE CONNECTIONS.
