I am presently working as a fisheries professional. I aspire to be a pharmacist. Due to some unavoidable circumstances, I had to tell my boss that I am aspiring to be a pharmacist and that I am signing up for pre requisite courses. Now my boss is asking me to do more and more work to keep me occupied in the fisheries profession. I hate my job and I don't enjoy what I am doing. I feel like quitting this job, but I am the primary provider of my family. I am earning around 37K a year in the present job. I don't know whether I have to stick with this job despite my hatred or should I resign even if it means I have to face unemployment or try to become a pharmacy techincian and earn less than what I am making now? I feel very depressed about my situation. Any advice and help is appreciated.
Thanks!

If you are the primary provider for your family, then it is very hard for you to come back to school.

You only have two options: keeping your own job to feed your wife and kids, or quitting the job and abandoning your family to persuade your career's goal. Which options will you choose?

Can your wife work and support you and the kids while you study?

Or at least work part time? To supplement income? Or can you take classes at night at a CC till you are ready for pharmacy school?

When there is a will there is a way? I know people that are single parents that have done it, so I am sure you could.

My wife is a foreign trained dentist and doesn't have license to practice here in the U.S. She is planning to do the two year international dentistry program for foreign trained dentist to get her licensure. She is applying this year to different schools that offer this program. Anyway the whole project would take her 2-3 years. Until then, I have to hold on to my present job. Currently, she does work part time as sales associate in Walmart. My problem is I hate my present job. I really hate my current job, but scared of resigning!

Well, you should wait for your wife to get her license and get work and then you won't have to worry. Are you Indian? Maybe you can send your kids to live with your parents or her parents until you guys get settled. That's what my parents did when they came to the US.

I am in a similar situation. However, I decided to keep my fed gov't job to help support my family, until my husband completes his degree next summer. Then I plan to complete the pre-reqs and apply for pharmacy school.

I pray you make the right choice for you and your family.

Take care.

Looking at your previous posts it looks like you've already gotten your CPhT certification so why not look for a technician job? Techs make a similar income to your current pay and some actually make more. I would recommend finding a hospital associated with a university to apply to since they usually offer tuition assistance (although a lot of hospitals offer this without being associated with a school).

I was able to work full-time and go to school part-time (6 - 7 credit hours) for free. It might take you a little longer to get through the pre-reqs but with a family to support it might be a good option. Working that much and going to school was stressful but I think it was worth it for me in the long run.

Elisaveth, PharmGrrlJax, MsPharmacist2B, Pearljam5a1: Thanks friends for your kind words and advice. I am from India and I have one kid - a 2-year old son. Me and my wife have considered sending him to India until we get settled.
Working as a pharm tech is a good option, but the pay is very low here in Arkansas -Nine to 10 dollars an hour. Anyway, I am trying to find a pharm tech position that will pay me around 35K a year. I will keep looking for hospital based pharm tech position.

I got an interview for pharm tech position at Walgreens tomorrow.

Congrats!

Presently, I am making 37K in my fisheries job. Like I mentioned earlier in my posts, I hate my current job. If I get an offer at Walgreens, should I take it and resign my present job?

No one can answer this for you. We don't know you. Chances are, you know what is best for you... Know thyself. You're truly miserable, so it might be worth the risk.

With the job in Walgreens will I be able to take pre-pharmacy courses? Will I have enough money and time to take pre-pharm courses? I am confused!

I imagine that if you worked 40 hours a week, you'd still have time to take 1 or 2 classes at night / on weekends, and whatnot. But your ability to do so will be drastically diminished, especially for the more challenging coursework. You'll need to ensure that your GPA doesn't suffer.

Enough money is a harder thing for us to quantify. We have no idea of your checking accounts, saving accounts, personal debt load (i.e., credit cards) etc... you should be discussing that with your S.O./family.

Good going. Are you in central AR? Yes, the pay isn't great at all... I am lucky that I am still single, with no family to take care of - but it's still a lot less than I was making at my last job. I just keep telling myself it will be worth it one day.

Good luck... let us know how it goes. :xf:

I was dissappointed today because the manager said the interview was not for pharmacy tech position, but for other positions in Walgreens. The manager told me that there is a corporate freeze on pharm tech positions!!! She told me that she can currently offer me any of the other positions (sales clerk or photo studio) and when an opening in the pharmacy becomes available, she would consider me for that position it seems.

Sounds too risky to me, but that's just me...

Do you really want to drop down to a minimum wage job based on a hope that you will someday be hired as a pharm tech?

Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do man, even if you hate it. I advise you to hold on right now and wait till your wife graduates (if she gets in this year).

Thank you so much friend. I will hold on to my job right now and wait till my wife graduates!

I had an interview for pharm tech position in Walgreens yesterday. A senior technician interviewed me. At the end of the interview, I told her I am interested in working part time on weekends. She told me that she would call me and let me know if I am hired. Approximately how long do you think it will take for them to call? Do I need to check with them after a couple of days?
Thanks in advance for your responses!
