Hey guys,

I'm new here. Decided to read forums while wallowing in self pity. I attended med school in the caribbean and it wasn't a very high standard school. Needless to say, I didn't learn much during basic sciences. I watched kaplan videos for all subjects and wrote down everything word for word - this took one year. I attended kaplan live lectures. I'm doing uworld right now but still getting no more than 40% on timed/mixed sets. I'm obviously doing a lot wrong. I did NBME 12 about 3 weeks ago and got 165. Please help me in pointing out what I can do different to get this exam over with. Since I've taken so long to study for this, I feel like the only way I can justify the time wasted is with a phenomal score. How do I achieve that in one month and is it possible?

Thanks so much in advance!

What school? If you have no choice but to take the test in one month, hammer out first aid a couple times. That's the best I can think of.

^agreed!

Memorizing first aid will improve your score drastically. Also, try to do more focused questions on Uworld, and stay away from mixed questions until you are highly confident in your knowledge base. Good luck! Stay strong

Thanks so much for the advice and for the hope! You're right, I didn't go thru FA from front to back as I should. I went through it by referencing things in it as I came across points in Uworld. I always put FA near the end of my priorities (big mistake) cuz one of my kaplan profs told us to leave it till the end as it should be used for reviewing only.

What do you guys think of goljan? I listened to the tapes and understood the concepts but some people are telling me I need to go through the textbook (close to 600 pages). That seems like such a long and daunting process but if needed, I guess it's gotta be done. Any opinions?

A guy I know who got 99 said he went over that textbook twice! :O

I agree
Kaplan videos make you understand and give you a sense of security but the test is really more like having a reflex to the questions. If you read the reviews, you ll realize that they test the basic concepts and your ability to integrate and rationalize, once you know the fact/concept.. Remembering everything from kaplan is tedious and not necessarily high yield. Keep it simple, know FA cold and learn how to apply it to UW. About goljan, NO. His audios are good, but the textbook is not highyield for step 1, more for step 2. Its very well written book, just not with the time constraints. The concepts in his audio are explained in UW too, so you could just stick with UW.
Dont panic, keep a steady mind and please please come off the mindset of self pity, it does harm. :luck:
