I am a Marketing/Management graduate and am looking to take the pre-reqs for the DPT program but am a little worried I won't get accepted anywhere. I have a cumulative 3.0 GPA in my undergrad. I have 9-10 classes to take for the pre reqs and am aiming for straight A's. I already have taken A & P I and II and statistics and Psychology in undergrad but I will retake them since I got like a C average in those. So retaking those 3 C's will boost my undergrad GPA a little correct? How do I get that adjusted? And if I get straight A's in all the pre-reqs will that also get me in an acceptance range considering I score well on the GRE and get good observation hours? One last question I know this is long. I work full-time and could only observe/volunteer on weekends, is this possible?

PLZ HELP!

Volunteering and observing on weekends is very do-able, since hospitals run 24x7, and most outpatient rehab clinics are open at least on Saturdays. All of my time was done on weekends. You can easily get 150 hrs in a year, working 4 hrs on Saturdays.

GPA: check the schools you want to apply to. Some schools average out the grades, others will look at the last grade.

Please more advice. Am I wasting my time trying to get in with only a 3.0? It is going to take me 2 years of pre reqs, volunteering, and taking the GRE all while I barely have any time to do this stuff. I am really motivated but I don't want to dedicate 2 years of all my free time just to get declined from schools.

I am a very similar candidate, except further along in this process. I am a business major who spent a few years out in the corporate world prior to pursuing entrance into PT school. I tried to take one class per semester while working, but found myself burning out after about a year of that.

I eventually quit my job and took an aide position, which allowed me to take prereqs full-time. It is an arduous and taxing process -- and I have yet to receive a true acceptance. Maybe take a vacation day or two and spend some time in a clinic to validate your desire for PT. If it's what you want to do, I say go for it.

Yea I am just going to have to tough it out because I have a decent full time job I don't want to give that up until I get acceptance somewhere. I so far have not had a problem taking A & P I while working full time, but I plan on upping it to 2 classes a semester starting spring and just take 1 over the summers. I figure I can do the volunteering mostly during the summertime since I will just be doing 1 course. Very stressful just thinking about it though.

Many schools seem to look at your overall GPA and prerequisite GPA independently, so I think it would look good if you did really well on your prereqs. Normally I seem to hear that you want to at least have a 3.0 if you plan on going this route, and that average should increase a bit if you do really well on your prereqs. Like you said, there's the GRE too. I don't think you'll be wasting your time at all by going forward from where you are now. Good luck!!

I was in the same boat - after deciding that I wanted to pursue a career in PT, I found that my undergrad GPA was the one critical thing that I could not change. So, that made me extra motivated to compensate for it - getting a good GRE score, rocking the pre-reqs, obtaining valuable and meaningful observation hours and recommendations, writing a good essay...
I would check at schools you are interested in and see what factors in particular they include in their decisions. At UIC (where I was accepted), for example, they state in their program criteria that the cumulative GPA in your junior and senior years count for 15% of your admissions 'score' - so that alone might not prevent you from getting in if the other 85% was outstanding. There really are a lot of inconsistencies in the application process from school to school, but I think that allows people more chances to find the places where they fit the best.
If this is where you think your destiny lies, go all in and give it an honest 100% every step of the way - no matter how small or inconsequential it may seem at the time. Develop the mindset that despite what shortcomings you may have had in the past, from this point on, you will simply work harder and hustle more than anyone else. Good luck!
