Please point out errors. Be viciously judgemental, like only pre meds can. Seriously. Thank you.

Dear Doctor, xxxxx

My name is xxxxxxxxx. I am a premedical student who has recently graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi and will be applying to William Carey College of Osteopathic Medicine this year. I was born and raised in Shelby Mississippi, a small town in the delta. I would love to practice primary care medicine in the delta, and my grades and MCAT scores make me a competitive applicant for osteopathic medical school. However, having exposure to the medical profession is required for admissions at most medical schools. I am contacting you to inquire about the possibility of job shadowing you for a few hours a week . Having this experience will help me get one step closer to my dream of practicing medicine.
Since we have never met, I would like to take this opportunity to tell you a little more about myself and my goals. My personal philosophy of life includes having determination, integrity, and being a positive role model for others. Having these values allowed me to become the first person in my family to graduate college and inspire my younger siblings to do the same. Since I grew up in the delta I am fully aware of a lot of the problems here. One of the biggest problems I see, is a lack of positive role models in the community. In this area, a lot of people never try simply because they don't think they can. One big reason I am pursuing a career in medicine is so that I can become that positive role model who shows young people that you can achieve great things despite the color of your skin, and the perceived difficulties of life. Over the years I have developed a passion for medicine and life long learning. I have decided I will do whatever is needed to reach my goals of practicing medicine, and leaving a legacies that inspires others. I asking for your help on this journey.

Sincerely,

xxxxxxxxxx

I think it's way way too long

Really? You dont think they should know anything about me? I will be asking for an LOR afterward.

divulging too much information at first leads to a bad impression.

kinda like a first date.

the doc's prob very busy. i'd say just keep it short, polite, and too the point.

I would axe the 2nd paragraph too. He/She'll know all that about you after you shadow a few times

Dear Dr. X, I am currently a premed student at Y school majoring in Z and was interested in shadowing you. Are you currently taking student observers? Thanks.

Sincerely,
John Smith

If interested you will get instructions on what you need to do in terms of forms and immunizations to be eligible for shadowing. Like many have said, short, sweet and to the point while being polite. I learned from my PI that blabbing on and on is not in your best interest and could quickly get annoying.

Doc's gonna be like TL😀R then say no.
Right 3-4 sentences and you are golden.

Fixed!

Dear Doctor xxxxx,

I was born and raised in Shelby, Mississippi, and I would love to practice primary care medicine in the delta. I am writing to ask if I might be able to shadow you for a few hours a week so I can see first-hand what primary care medicine is like. Having this experience will help me get one step closer to my dream of practicing medicine.

Sincerely,

+1

When I was trying to find an Osteopathic physician to shadow, I called and said I was interested in finding out more about the osteopathic medical profession and would love the opportunity to shadow you for a few days. Result: Have been shadowing the doc for few months now...

Thanks guys for the advice. Funny thing, I didn't even use the letter. The first doctor I called agreed to let me shadow. I start next week. 🙂 I wonder if there is a way to close this thread?
