Hello Everyone my name is Maja,

I'm looking to get into dental school, in particullar I'm interested at applying to UIC. I already have 103 credit hours, (taking 10 right now for a total of 113) and am working towards my bio-chemistry major. My current GPA is 3.47.

I'm really interested in any basic information and advice you guys can give me as far as Applying and Taking/Preparing for the DAT.

I'm currently studying from the Kaplan DAT course book and I'm wondering if there's anything else I should study? I'm planning to take the DAT in May.

I'm really lost here as far as what steps to take and what to do so please be patient with me and help me out.

Welcome- do a search in the DAT forum - I know there's LOADS of good DAT stategy advice in there. I sorta wish I knew about SDN and the DAT forum before I took it!

Check out Predents.com as well. Its a great site for stats and information about the schools. Top score for the DAT helped me along with Kaplan. The best part for me about Kaplan was the strategies they provided. Their books are good, but their in class instruction I always found a bit lacking. The best way to study since you have a good amount of time is map out when you want to study what, so the last weeks before you take the DAT you arent scrambling to cover a bunch of info you forgot to earlier. Also this helps you focus and master one section at a time. Good luck.

DAT forums probably your best bet, but i used kaplan and topscore. they were cheap and they did the job.

In addition to doing well on the DAT... Make sure you get as much experience in the field observing, or even better working to set you apart from other applicants. Do as much extra curricular as possible. Your GPA is pretty good, but everyone who applies and gets into school has a good GPA. Find some way to set yourself apart. GOOD LUCK... But the best advise is really to apply early. That means get AADSAS in by one of the first weeks of june, not july or august. June 1st will really be best. With so many applications now, AADSAS really gets bogged down and backed up even if you apply as late as July or August.

You mentioned work. How does one get work in a dental office (namely, one who did not study dental assisting or the like)?

I think submitting your application ASAP is number ONE. So I submitted my application first, then took the DAT. I also used Kaplan and Topscore and found them helpful. I would also concentrate on shadowing dentists (just call them up!) and develop a specific hobby or talent (for manual dexterity) if you don't already have one.

what do you mean by manual dexterity? What month did you take DAT?

Take the DAT no later than Aug. Still the sooner the better.
