HI everybody,

I have a question regarding two univerisities ... CWRU and temple university
Which one do you think is better in terms of:
1. Academic
2. Clinic
3. Cheaper (how much)
4. Saftey ( is a big one)
5. confidence as a dentist at the end
6. reputation

I've seen CWRU and I can say I was very very impressed with the school and the clinic and also I know couple of people who are from there and they say the standard of living is not bad at all..
but on the other hand I can't really judge temple cuz I've never been there but I've heard positive things from a student I know who got in this year and I've heard negative things about the clinic as well, the most important thing that really worries me is the saftey issue....bu then temple is cheaper than CWRU but am not sure how much is it cheaper?

Please what you think from your experience, I would really appreciate that!!!

I cant tell you anything about CRWU , but I can tell you a little bit about Temple. First of all dont worry about the cost, you can always take out loans, and should have no rpoblem paying them back once your done (trust me it was between a $25,000 school and $45,000 a year school for me and I ended up picking the 45). Im sure there isnt that much of a price difference. I know Temple has one of the top clincial reputations in the nation. But on the academic side, which i assume you mean research there is bascially absolutly nothing. Temple is none for the clinical skills and thats it. They also have great facilities. I dont know about the faculty as I have heard some negative things about them. Safety is also a huge concern. Bacially you have to have an armed guard escort you out if you are working late. Dont let the admissions council lie to you saying "it isnt that bad, we just have crimes of oppurtnity, such as if you leave things out"...right. Just ask to look at the crime stats, I go to Upenn on the "better" side of Philly and we are still scared walking home late at night, as we have something like 100 muggings a year on campus, and we have cops all over the place. But then again I dont think many people work late at the school and instead go home to study, and the Temple kids live in a pretty nice part of Philly about 10-15 mins from the school by bus.

i've walked to the parking lot at 10pm and later several times....it's really not that bad b/c there are football lightings that line broad street. It is always better to be safe though and walk with other people if you can.

Tom I am definitley waiting for Buffalo as well ... but temple is something am really worried about since am getting mixed messages about it... some say it is a great university especially clinical part which i definitley believe it..!!

Others saythe saftey issue is a big concern especially for a girl..
Am from Canada and i want my parents to sleep at night and not to worry all the time..
If anybody from temple university or lives there ... you opinion would be appreciated and am sure not just for me ... for a lot of students applying there

Well, at temple I know that there are escorts (plenty of them) to take you to your car. I think as long as your walking with someone you should be ok. Pretty much, you just need to use common sense, and be very aware of your surroundings. Plus, you don't want to leave any valuables in your car cause someone may break into it. For the most part, most of the crimes/thefts that I've heard about are because the victim just wasn't careful (ie, left a bunch of CD's out in the open in his/her car). I am currently a first year right now, and I must say that I am enjoying my stay here. I haven't experienced anything negative with faculty, but I'm pretty sure that in any other dental school, there's always something negative about the faculty, or from at least one person in the faculty. Temple is definitely cheaper than case western. I don't know case's tuition, but I know Temple's tuition is 36,000 for out of state residents and 26K for in-state residents. And like others have said, Temple has one of the strongest clinical programs, but as far as research goes...it's probably not that great. You will definitely end up being better off as a general dentist from Temple than most other schools. If you want to specialize though, you may want to go to a more research-oriented school. I hope this helps! Any single dental school is not perfect.....it just all depends on what the person is looking for and how it suits him/her. Good luck in your decision!
