Can anyone plse help me!
I have a bachelor's degree in Mol Bio from Univ. TX dallas, 3.5 gpa, honors program, lots of activities, lots of dental shadowing (but done in Kuwait), working on getting in some shadowing here in the states; also have research. I am international so they will be more stringent in my case. Will take Dat Aug 30- am applying right away.
I need to knw this:
1) What schools am I likely to get into? Is there any way I can call and find out where to apply to even be considered? (financial constraints)
2)Is there a great advantage in applying through your pre-health advisory committee? I already graduated- I hope they won't hold a non-AC application against me.
3)How can I find a cosigner for a loan?
4) In general what you think of my credentials: strong, good, fair, bad, poor?

I'd say your credentials sound good, but DAT scores are a pretty big part of those credentials. So, until you have that it's hard to say. It also depends on what research you did (you could have done research on something really simple that may not impress anyone), exactly what your extracurriculars were, etc. Your GPA is good, so you're set there. I'd say concentrate on doing well on the DAT first, then start considering where you can and cannot go. After all, you could have good grades, lots of extracurriculars, research, etc., but a terrible DAT score that drags everything down. Good luck on the DAT!

Thanks so much for the reply. I was beginning to think that I was invisible to all.

Extra-curriculars: student government- senator, committee chair, tons of other stuff like being in the committee that chooses the dept dean.

Research: I researched drugs at the tissue culture level that could be potential treatment for neurodegenerative diseases.

Working on DAT!

Thanks again.

anyone got anything to say, anything?

you might have more luck on the predental board, that's generally where people go to post and answer these kind of admission questions.

I can only comment on Texas schools. As you're probably already aware, all 3 schools give strong preference to Texas residents. I would call up the admissions offices to set up an appointment to come visit the schools. They may be able to give you an idea if you are a likely candidate. If you can be considered a TX resident for admissions purposes, I'd say your chances of getting into one of the 3 schools is good. UT Houston's avg GPA is somewhere around 3.6 (or so I've been told) so depending on how the DAT and interview go, I'd say your chances here are fair to good.

this wkend is just slower than normal

great stats. also need a solid DAT: ~20, ~19 on PAT.(just a ballpark). apply to private school. it wont hurt to apply many schools especially, u cant risk to not getting into a sch and sent back to ur kuwait.

which sch will accept u is hard to tell without the DAT. my recommendation is about 10-15 sch includes upenn, tuft, columbia, BU, NYU, Nova, and more.

i didnt apply neither good knowledge with a advisory committee. and didnt ask for a cosigner.

Hi Catchmehere44,

I was also from T X, am an international student and attending Temple dental school. I think you should get your DAT above 21 (PAT isn't that important, coz they don't really look at 'em) then you would stand a chance to stay in TX for dental school coz those are really strict on considering out of state applicants. Whatever i told you was from Dr. Long, director of admission at Baylor. Also, you can apply out of state schools as back up, they are a bit expensive but you will be able to pay it off. About cosigner, do you have other relatives living in the US? It's kinda hard to ask somebody not close to you to do that. YOu can do some more research about loans. I remembered one time in international dental forum, somebody mentioned about loan program without a cosigner. I hope that helps a bit for you.

my1molar,

Your post was like a ray of hope to my existence. So you are on a visa as well? Could I PM you? I have a lot of questions and I would really appreciate it if you would answer them.

I took a practice DAT yesterday without any prep whatsoever and got a 16 in Bio, 15 in Chem and 13 in Org CHem (I know these are appalling scores considering that I have studied that stuff fro my major and in high school so many times). I have two months to study for DAT. You think I can make it to 21? I know that is a silly question but I am in a weird situation and I have to have grad school as back up. So I am also taking GRE. And all this is making me really desperate.

Which year of dentistry are you in?

Thanks a million.
