What is the demand for PM&R physicians in hospitals? I know many of those who specialize decide to open up their own practice, but what if I don't have interest in opening up my own practice and just want to work in a hospital. Is it hard to find a job?

Look in the back of the purple journal - you'll see a lot of inpt jobs. Academics too.

Whats the purple journal? And are you saying that as a PM&R, there are a lot of jobs open for hospitals and academics?

The journal is called "PM&R" - it's the newest journal as the AAPM&R severed ties with the red journal (Archives of PM&R) and started it's own.

Last I checked (a few months ago) there were plenty of inpt jobs, including academics.

Also, some hospitals will have outpt clinics staffed by PM&R - pain, sports, etc.

Ultimately, I think if you do not want to own your practice (I've been there, don't want to do it again) you should consider an employed position with a group, such as a multi-specialty group. Mine is a combo of Ortho, PM&R, Rheumatology and Podiatry (21 docs and growing).

Hospitals, the CEO's in particular, who own medical practices or employ physicians tend to think they "own" the physicians as well. One thing I have learned over the years is that hospital admins are not your friends. Treat them as you would a car salesman - someone you have to deal with from time to time who is all smiles and handshakes, but they will screw you over as much as they can any time they can for their own gain.
