when I first started medical school, I pretty much was dead set on going to be a gas man, than i discovered a real love for neuro and cardio. Unfortunately when I have done rotations in these fields, I didn't feel alot of satisfaction, and I felt most of the doctors were rushed, and had no personal connections with their patients.

Perhaps I am still naive, but I would prefer to actually be able to know my patients. Although I love the "thinking" parts of medicine, I also need some procedures to keep me going.

Amazingly I came across the medscape article about PM&R and now think i've found a field that was crafted for me.

My question is, what are the prospects for an IMG interested in pM&R. I had read that past it was an iMG friendly field, although that isn't what guided me to the field.

Fortunately for my school, we are huge neuro/radio intensive. From year 1-3 we are forced to take a neuro & radio classes (forced electives at my school). Currently in yrII, we are already suppose to have mastered normal radio and learning how to read abN CT,MRI, etc. As for neuro, its very comprehensive. (Neuro dept head is president of neurology association in country I am studying in which means very neuro heavy medical education.)

My school does offer me the chance to do US rounds for 4th year if I can get accepted into a program that would take me. Does anybody know of any programs that offer PM&R clerk elective for an IMG?

Also, any suggestions for an IMG thinking of going into pm&R. I have not done a rotation yet in it, but from everything what I have read, it seems like mixing the best things of medicine that seem to interest me.

thanks

I can tell you that as an IMG, you probably have a better chance of matching in PM&R than you do in anesthesiology.

PM&R has a high % of IMG by history. Check NRMP data for recent figures, but PM&R is likely still high.

A sincere interest in the field counts for more than you would think. The perception is that many IMGs in PM&R are there due to not getting into their preferred field, i.e. PM&R was their "back-up" plan. I knew several from residency that fit that and had no problems admiting it. Choosing PM&R as your primary interest will show on interviews and improve your chances.
