I was just taking a look at the PM&R residency program at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center, Brooklyn NY program.

It has the following requirements:

"Prospective applicants must have a minimum board score of 205 (85) on USMLE Step 1 or 600 on COMLEX and have passed these examinations on their first or second attempts. "

Now a 600 on comlex is a superrrrrrrrr high score and 205 on USMLE is not that competitive.

So my question is how can they require such a super high comlex score and a low USMLE score??? Is this a mistake or is this for real?

Hmm. Does seem a bit imbalanced. Call them?

they're using the idiotic conversion formula. give the program a call/email

this is why you take the usmle, just a better and more simple way for comparison and also a better opportunity to score interviews, even if PM&R is considered a DO friendly specialty and DOs do match with only comlex score

Does this school really require such a high Comlex score??

I can't agree more with wavygravy and DOctorJay.

Taking USMLE has become particularly more important because starting next year with the new ACGME policy of requiring residents entering PM&R advanced programs to complete an ACGME PGY-1 year, programs will likely raise the bar for the DO candidates (e.g. interviewing only the stronger DO applicants who did superb on COMLEX and/or well on USMLEs = better odds of getting into an ACGME internship than DO students who passed only the COMLEX with below avg scores).

During the AAP meeting at the end of this month, this topic will be thoroughly discussed.

is this a field specific change? interesting stance... are you aware of other specialties making this change as well?

My understanding is that it is still up in the air to some degree. It would apply to all specialties, not just PMR. It would also have major impacts on international medical grad. Also I have been told that some residency programs (the one I know is a radiology residency in New Jersey) that has already decided to enforce this rule. That is, they are telling applicants this year that they will only accept an MD intern year. We'll have to see what happens.
