MCV
Utah
Charlotte
UAB
San Antonio
JFK (gets more play on this board than amongst most residency applicants)

I am tempted to start one more thread of over-rated programs that don't deserve the reputation they have, but my hunch is, people will take offence, so I will leave that for someone else to initiate.

I think another program that should be on the list is Temple...was really impressed with the program and attending there. I think it gets a bad rep. for being in north Philly.

What do you guys think?

Temple (McGee), like Jefferson (Moss), are both great programs at great rehab centers (likely one of the 15 in everyone's top 10), but honestly are well known within the rehab world, and so I didn't really think of them as secrets, or hidden gems.

definitely agree with JFK - probably the most cush rehab program out there - one of their seniors just matched for fellowship (interventional spine/pain management) with Furman. Before that, they sent one to Florida Spine. They are definitely doing well. With only 4 per class, it's definitely getting more and more selective. And with Dr. Strax, Dr. Uustal, and Dr. Cuccurullo's new book, the name is getting out.

Good thread,

Unfortunately three years too late for myself.

I had interview invites at most of those places but turned them down because I simply didn't know any better.

As far as I know, Temple has always had a strong rep amongst programs in the Northeast, or PM&R in general.

What I didn't like when I interviewed there was that there was somewhat of an attitude floating around the place.

From what I hear from some of our 4th yr med students who interviewed there, it still exists.

Really, I didn't get that impression at all. When I intervied, I thought all the attending were very welcoming, except for one that pimped me on EMGs & DVTsPx.

Although, I felt that attitude at other places I interviewed at in NYC area.

let's start a post of over-rated programs. i don't have any, as i'm still an MS IV, but i'd like to read some good posts...

Great list!
Interviewed at alot of these places. Going from memory.

Utah is definately an underrated program. Small but good musculoskeletal experience. Nice area, good folks. Real up and coming program, kind of like a UNC of the west.

MCV and JFK are both solid programs, have heard only great things about those places.

UVA, (I assume that's what you mean by Charlotte)actually I thought alot of folks knew about this place. Has some fairly prominent faculty members, and it's a great institutution. This place was really high on my rank list.

Don't know too much about the other two.

Although I believe UVa is a VERY strong, up and coming program, and that Casey Kerrigan is one of the bright lights in PM&R today, no, I actually meant Charlotte Institute of Rehabilitation @ Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC headed by William Bockenek.

Charlotte Institute of Rehabilitation is a great program. I spent a month there and interviewed there recently as well. Dr. Bockenek is a great program director and resident advocate. He was a recipient of the Parker J. Palmer award in 2004. That award is essentially for the top 10 program directors in the country including all specialties. I will soon post on "stories from the interview trail" about this program.
