Hello all,

I am an osteopathic medical student about to take my comlex (in 25 days!).
I am very interested in a PM&R residency.

What are the average Comlex scores the residency programs are looking for?
What can i do to make myself a better applicant?
Is it more beneficial to do a surgery, IM, or transitional first year of residency?
Where are the best programs?

Any information would be great!

Thanks~

NMRP might have Comlex scores, I know they report USMLE scores.

Do transitional or IM, depending on your interests and needs, surgery is not needed. You will usually do some surgical rotations on transitional year.

The best PM&R candidates are those that do well in classes and board scores, and most importantly, have a sincere interest in PM&R and a good sense of what we do. Try to do at least 2 electives in PM&R and get at least 2 LORs from PM&R.

Average COMLEX score nationwide is 500. Average USMLE step I is around 220. Average USMLE for US allopathic seniors who matched into PM&R is 214.

Bottom line: nice board scores are nice, but in PM&R especially we tend to look beyond scores.

What PMR said. Learn as much as you can about the field. Know and understand what you’re about to go into. Do rehab electives as early as possible (to confirm your love for PM&R) and get solid LORs in time for ERAS and interviews.

Is it more beneficial to do a surgery, IM, or transitional first year of residency?

Doesn’t matter. As an osteopath you could also do the traditional rotating year. If you hate the OR and/or value sunlight you might want to avoid prelim surgery.

Where are the best programs?

Let's see... I’ve heard there are good programs in Illinois, Washington, NY/NJ, Texas, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Michigan, ...
