Anyone here happen to match into PM&R residency and is a Caribbean graduate?

If so, please share your story. What program are you in? Is your program friendly for elective rotations to audition for Carib med students? Thanks.

I'm a DO student myself, but during one of my PM&R clerkships at a very prestigious program in the northeast, I met one of the chief residents who happened to be a Ross grad. He seemed really sharp and many people spoke highly of him. Don't know if that helps at all but thought you might like to hear about a Caribbean grad who's done well in the world of PM&R.

One of the chiefs at UMDNJ-NJMS is a caribbean grad but he also was a PT prior to med school so that certainly didn't hurt. I believe by the time 3rd and 4th year rotations come around many are done in NY depending on your school from what I've heard talking to people, so trying to find PMR electives will go a long way. I think the majority of showcasers did rotations through Dr. Stitik and Dr. Foye who are outpatient MSK docs at University Hospital in Newark, so that may be a place to start looking. Getting into Kessler is a little bit harder since they are their own entity - look into contacting Debra Roney at UMDNJ if you want to try to find a spot.

There are a ton of them. Look at Dr Varghese in Missouri, or that Lobel guy in Georgia.

I'm the chief resident at LSU (and a Saba med grad). But don't let anyone fool you, there is still a HUGE stigma against accepting IMGs/FMGs. It's an image thing.

And yeah, that "Lobel guy in Georgia" has done well for himself. 😀

I'm in the same boat, as a US-IMG who went and studied in Europe (instead of the Caribbean). I understand that there is this massive stigma ... but do you think programs would send invites out if they've already made their mind up to rank u low? Seems like it would be a waste of time to them.

I have some great interviews lined up... and I always thought that if I received the interview, then it's fair game from there on (irrespective of whether I'm an IMG or not)

Thoughts anyone?

RELAX. Best thing you can do is to prepare for your interviews and do well. Check out as many programs as you can. Try to save your sanity!

Nobody can speak for all the programs you applied to. I think it's safe to say that your performance on interview day is just a piece of your application. Best of luck and don't freak out (it's much too early for this).

Thanks VApmrdoc...I e-mailed Ms. Roney last Thursday. Hope I get a response. :xf:

No, there might actually be two Asian grads this year, I know one happens to be a phenomenal electromyographer which certainly makes his classmates very lucky, good try though. There is a Caribbean grad (who I will say is also excellent and the first I believe in the programs history that I know of) and also a Puerto Rican medical grad.

Either way it's not unfriendly there to a good candidate or for medical students trying to get an idea of the field from my limited experience.
