Anyone have a good pneumonic for reading cxr's?

It seems the A-airway, B-bones .... one is pretty good but I really don't know all of it and can't find a good reference for it.

Any hints on approaching a CXR would be appreciated.

First of all, it's "mneumonic."

Secondly here's your mneumonic:

Airway, Bones, Cardiac, Diaphragm, Effusion, Fields (lung), Gastric, Hilar, Inspiration.

Hope that helps!

Thirdly, it's mnemonic. But now I'm just being pedantic.

i noticed that too. if you want to be taken seriously, you have to spwell rite!

also for e, i put effort. you want to see good inspiratory effort, with at least nine ribs visible.

start with describing the view, quality of the xray, then i just go from medial to lateral...

so something like..this is a chest PA upright, with good exposure and effort, trachea is midline, heart is not enlarged, lungs are clear, no bony abnormalities, no soft tissue swelling...

but i was never good with mnemonics anyway...

How do you know if it is good or bad? They may have pleuritic chest pain, muscle tear etc. They may have been trying their best but didn't get to the magic number of nine.

Low lung volumes is a better description that doesn't place value on our patients effort.

At least this is the lecture I got last year from the radiology gods that be at my med school when I suggested a patient had a poor inspiratory effort. 😉

#1. Well I feel like a total idiot for misspelling mneumonic. 🙁 Maybe I was thinking air b/c chest xray ... oh well. Too early in the AM or something I guess. But its bad when you misspell it in both subject AND the post ... haha.

#2. Thanks for all the hints, I keep getting pimped on these damn ABC's and everyone has a different opinion exactly what is what. I like what you guys have suggested. One guy had A->L and expected me to remember it the next day.

its mnemonic...no U in there. you've got to know how to spell before you can learn a mnemonic - otherwise, you'd be confused what that extra letter was for, right?

yeah, there's a limit to the number of mnemonics one can learn. it can get really confusing (icgrc)...lol.

lol
i took one look at that mnemonic site and busted out laughing.

"camp"
"dull jam"
"mi cham"
"hen scam"

how can anyone remember so many mnemonics?!!!! much less what they stand for. abcdefg is about as complicated a mnemonic that i can handle.

Which is why I quit using them ages ago. I can remember any number of stupid phrases or strings of letters but rarely can I remember what they stand for. About the only thing I use anymore is SIGEMCAPS for depression and then only w/ regards to documentation.
