is texas holdem a good or bad activity to list on amcas? Would it be bad to mention in it interviews as a hobby?

I LOVE Hold 'em. I just won a tournament at Party Poker last week (after a year of trying) MAN was that great. I think it is probably not the best thing to mention though...

im an ultimatebet guy hehe, ive won some freerolls before! it took me a year to get good at a 5000 person tourney hehe, some of it is luck of course. I spend alot of time playing it, im buying books about it now too. I guess it is inappropriate huh, dont want them to think im a gambler now!

Freerolls are a giant waste of time - too many people play them with no idea of how to play - then again, 3,7 offsuit just won the WSOP, so who am I to judge.

Ugh. Don't get me started on online poker. There was a loosely similar thread about someone mentioning a casino startup on AMCAS and because the legality of online gambling in the United States is up in the air right now...it's almost assuredly not a good idea.

(I am biased though. Personally...I hate the game and had some horrible experiences with it, and while not everyone does...in the long run very few people come out on top. Even some of the seasoned pros have said they have trouble breaking even at the end of the year. I looked at the list of the top 500 finishers at this year's WSOP and I saw maybe 5 names that I recognized. Just my $.02...)

I dont play to really win major money, its just damn fun when ya hit a straight on the river!! what an adrenaline rush ya know beating odds like that. I played alot of tourneys run by several college clubs i think their legal. There are no "pros" anymore imo, every year someone new will win the bracelet b/c there so many damn ppl now, and alot more luck is involved.
Oh and on the freerolls, i know there pretty much a waste of time, but i dont really like playing for money that much i think ive spent like $50 total this year playing poker.

I actually have a buddy from college who graduated with a 3.9 in Bioengineering and snaked a 40 on the MCAT but wasted his last two years doing nothing but playing online poker. He kinda lost his interest in medicine and doesn't know what to do with his life. I think any profession or employer would view poker or any gambling negatively due to its addictiveness.

poker rules, i play at pokerroom and empire. I usually make 300-500 bucks a month.

I completely agree, Freerolls are a waste of time. Free poker has got to be the most ridiculous game ever.

Now...73o is a bad hand but when you are playing heads up for the WSOP and can get a free flop (did Hachamen get a free flop on that one) then of course you look at it. He flopped a straight! How about that. Slowplayed that, his opponent hit his A on the turn and he won with the straight. Amazing!

If you have some fantastic, verifiable Poker achievement then you should list it. Like "I won the Binions's Classic WPT poker event and the $1.2M first place prize." How can a medical school frown upon that? C'mon now guys, I think we take this physician moral high-ground a little too far sometimes. I love poker and I play it when I can, and I'm completely not embarrassed by it. And there are thousands of doctors who also play poker and/or gamble otherwise. I think I might bring it up in an interview if the situation calls for it, and I think the interviewer can handle it and not judge me.

Seriously don't list it unless you've some major tournament (live tournament) because I'm sure online gambling is frowned upon. We can all claim to play as good as Doyle Brunson or some other pro but its different live and most gamblers are losers (money wise) anyway.

as far as interviews go, you can mention it when they ask "what fun things do you like to do?" make sure to mention though that you don't just play for money but rather the interaction and testing yourself whether you can read people. you know, give a smart answer.

Hmm.. Maybe I should switch online sites so I can hang with the SDNers.. maybe we should get a table once just for fun and play against each other - any takers?

BTW my truly favorite tournament is the PokerRoom Lucky Dollar. One dollar gets you into a 5000 prize pool. I usually do pretty well until JokerRoom goes on a bad beat spree and my aces are cracked by 8 5 off.

Yes if you spin it intelligently (i.e. psychological, mental, mathematical) I think it could be viewed as an acceptable hobby. Just make sure you don't sound compulsive. I am going to mainly highlight my social home games with my HS friends.

message me when you guys play, I'm down for a game

Next week I go to Chicago Tuesday, so Monday? ring game is fine - that is all you can set up on Party Poker - I just prefer sit n go... more fun for some reason... if ever you are on PP - my SN is the same as it is on here...

Monday 10 est works for me - which site should we go to? limit? nl? who all is in?

We can make a thread on here on Sun to discuss the details. Especially since we need to make sure we have 10 people on the same site, same time and such.

Def. No Limit if it is Texas Hold 'em. I am open to play all the games as I am proficient in HE, Razz, Omaha, Stud, Draw....

I'm in. So don't leave me out. It's great to see that we share many similarities. Brett we're both conservative, interested in business, and now poker. That works for me as well.

No limit baby, it's not poker if it isn't according to old Doyle.

most of you probably know that this past week was the main event of the wsop. my buddies were waiting in a long line to get into the main event (day 15) poker room. i met up with them late so i couldn't get in line with them so i went outside, and who did i meet but the 1998 winner scotty nguyen right outside of binion's horseshoe casine. and to top that off, i got my picture taken with him and his michelob light (he's known for for that). that definitely made my vegas trip

While I didnt write that I play poker as a hobby on my amcas, it somehow came up in one of my interviews. I happened to bring it up (i can't remember why) and my interviewer started asking me wierd questions like "How does it feel to you when you win? Do you feel good? Do you want to keep doing it more and more?" I couldnt tell if he was joking with me or serious. Anyway, I got into the school so it must not have hurt me. I didnt put it on my amcas though.

I propose a private ring tourny table at Pokerroom at 10 pm EST on Sunday night. Buy in of $20 with rebuy if desired. The game goes two hours until 12 at which point everybody walks with what they have. Sound fair and fun? Any other suggested modifications?

I'm IN. BTW, my UltimateBet handle is "thegenius". I'm not on too much these days though...I've got 15 secondaries and expect another 15 to come in soon.

Oops, I didn't realize this is on pokerroom.com. I don't have an account there.

i cant do the $20 considering i have a buncha secondaries amcas aacomas and mcat to pay for lol, plus id have to make a min of $25 deposit on pokerroom!

I've got accounts already on pokerroom and PartyPoker, and am willing go switch to another site if needed - abe, if my proposal doesn't work, would you care to propose an alternative?
