Is anyone else having a really hard time taking post bacc classes? Right now, I'm doing the Official AnAppleADay Post-Bacc program. I feel like it's so half-assed, because I live in SoCal, where you can't take any classes if you've got a BA. I'd apply to a masters program, but I've already got one of those, too. Plus, my undergrad grades are so poor, and I don't have the pre-reqs for a science based masters. This is so frustrating!
So, I'm wondering why I didn't just take all of these classes before. You know, when getting classes wasn't a problem. Grrr....

Anyway, enough whining... Does anyone in CA have any suggestions as far as taking classes goes? I've thought about SMC, but I'm not sure how that'll look, plus, it'd probably take me 2 hours to get there (I'm in North OC). Any success stories? Recommendations? Anything?

I had a friend of mine take classes at community college after she got her B.A. (She is in SoCal). I know most people would advise you against taking pre-med classes at CC. Have you tried Cal State schools? I thought some of them had post-bac programs.

What about Cal State Fullerton, Apple? At one time I was contemplating a postbacc there following graduation from UT Austin. The office was really nice. Maybe they can help?

Have you taken your pre-reqs? If not, then lemme suggest a CC. If you have.....then CSUF.

Thanks for your help, Evo! I didn't think Fullerton was taking post-bacc students, but it's certainly worth a shot.

I'm currently attempting Chem at a CC. I say attempting because it's still up in the air whether or not I'll be accepted into the class. I wasn't able to register ahead of time (long story), so I had to crash. Unfortunately, the professor turned away about 10 students (who were enrolled), when they arrived about 10 minutes late to the class.

::sigh::

I don't think any of the schools esp Cal State and UC are taking post bacc students. But I know at UCI you can try to take classes through extension. At least you'll be at a uc school. Have you looked into usc, scripps, chapman?

SFSU and SJSU have a post bac program, informal but they have things available to you. If you are trying to stay in So Cal look at Fullerton.

SFSU - http://online.sfsu.edu/~brothman/Post-Bac Program.htm

SJSU - http://www2.sjsu.edu/depts/Biology/programs/postmed.html

If you email Dr. Robert Fowler [email protected], he will send out snail mail to you and I'm sure answer any questions you have via email.

I am here in Cali too and trying not to leave as I have thin California skin and the clod and snow just don't seem like fun to me even though that seems to be where all the schools are. We do have some options here in Cali. There's Scripps and I believe they have a linkage agreement.

Check them out, let me know what you decide, maybe if you come up here to Nor Call we can go through the same program. 🙂

Hi there,

You might want to check tis site out if you haven't already.

http://services.aamc.org/postbac/

It is an organized site by AAMC state by state of all the individual programs (including postbacc and special master's programs) with different search options available.
California has at least 6 or 7 programs available, most of them through the UC's (UC Irvine, UC Davis, UCLA, UC San Diego, UC San Francisco). I'm in the UCLA Program if you have any questions.

Depending on your needs, formal programs are cool because you get to know the administrators who often communicate with adcoms of their respective schools.
