Anyone else get nervous when they see "what's wrong with the United States healthcare?" type questions on secondaries?

Don't be tempted...they want a diplomatic, informed answer...at least, that's how I approached it.

I think I can do that.

Maybe Pro, Con, Pro. (This is great about it, EXCEPT, and this is how it needs to be fixed and it will be even better)

Yeah, it's less, what do you think and more what's an objective, informed view on the situation.

It's tempting to rant on the question, but I'm holding back too ;)

healthcare/obamacare questions are also common at interviews. as future physicians you're expected to read up and be informed and give reasoned answers, but that's about it.

yeah, it's not really the obamacare thing I feel weird discussing.. I think i have a good handle on that. but that I believe citizens should be more reaponsible regarding preventable disease. (like say disease caused by obesity), generally I like to discuss it when discussing healthcare (along with insurance and policy and accessibility, etc.) but I think I could end up accidentally offending

Nah as long as you don't attack any different position and have a well reasoned response you will be fine. It is more about defending a position then attacking one so pick a side and stick to it and if it comes up in interviews have an open mind about the other side and be willing to look into the other position.

I know the very very basics about US health care as I am Canadian and haven't looked into it too much...AmIScrewed?:scared:

IF you got this question, I'd honestly just talk about your health system and the pros/cons.

They are not looking for politics or to judge your opinion. They are looking to see if you HAVE an opinion and can you express it without resorting to Fox News (or any liberal bloggers) as sources.

Saying "I think there are too many uninsured" is different than saying "health care is a right" or "obamacare is awesome." If you state facts like people go bankrupt from healthcare, america ranks low on health care, infant mortality is way too high, our research is the best, etc. without giving a specific solution politically, then you answering correctly.

So could saying that you think health care is right be a potentially harmful statement in an interview? They are asking you opinion, and well, that is my opinion. You think we should stick to indisputable facts like the ones you stated but not say what you personally think would be the best way to go about these problems?

I was asked and I was honest and told them I thought it was a right. I got accepted. My responses were liberal, but not radical. So, up to you. Just don't be radical. "I support healthcare for everyone" vs. "socialized medicine is god."

Thanks a lot. I really appreciate your input. If I get asked this question, I was thinking of taking the route of talking about my morals and how I believe that it health care is a right and everyone should have access to it no matter who they are or what is wrong or how much money they have. I think it is only human for us take care of our fellow citizens.

If someone thinks that is socialism than I don't even know what to tell them.
