Hello everyone.

I can't decide what to take during summer, and the registration deadline is coming up. I would greatly appreciate some input from you experienced folks. Please respond if you have taken these classes.

My goal is to finish a "series" this summer. FYI, my school is on a quarter system fall through spring.

My choices are:

Organic Chemistry 1 - Jun 25-Jul 20
Organic Chemistry 2 - Jul 23-Aug 17
Organic Chemistry Lab - Aug 20-Sep 7

OR

Physics 201 - Jun 25-Jul 20
Physics 202 - Jul 23-Aug 17
Physics 203 - Aug 20-Sep 7
(All are Algebra-based)

I am willing to dedicate my existence to these classes for the summer, so the idea of studying tons isn't intimidating. Still, I want the "easier" experience of the two choices. Of course there are a lot of variables that go into that, but if you can just provide some superficial insight that would be good enough for me!

A little background:

Generally get A's B's in biology/chemistry/calculus (mostly A's)

If you were me, which one would you do?

(NOTE: if the poll works like I hope it will, then the first option should be organic chemistry, and the second option should be physics)

Thanks!

personally i would do orgo but if your good with math take physics

I would never do this to begin with... but, i would do physics. However, i haven't even taken orgo yet, but, i have read people suggesting to not even take one of the ochems during a regular summer semester.

So far the consensus is that this is indeed a tough decision! Thanks for the votes, folks.

I did Orgo 1 over the summer and it was great. I did get a bit burned out, though, and decided not to do Orgo 2 til the fall. At my school, physics was much harder over the summer because there were more required assignments. It's really better to get an opinion from people at your university than from SDN.

it seems that it takes longer to absorb concepts for physics which requires a lot of practice problems. it could be better to take orgo in the summer and leave plenty of time for physics during the year so you can get better acquainted with all of the equations and their applications.

Do physics. For Organic there is just simply too much information especially if you take the labs as well.

I personally think Orgo is easier than physics and looking at your background in biology/chemistry (at least those are the only grades you listed), you might have an easier time with Orgo. However, since you need both either way, it doesn't really matter. Depends on whether you want an easier experience in the summer or during the school year.

I've taken both physics and organic chem during the summer. Take whichever one YOU think will be easier for YOU. For me, this was physics, simply because of the volume of material in organic chemistry.

I felt that physics takes time to develop (given you haven't taken it before, or aren't a genius at math), whereas O-chem is more like dedicating a lot of hard work and time.

I'm definitely not a genius at math. I had to work hard for good grades in calculus - it doesn't come naturally. I don't have an "engineer's mindset." Additionally, I have ZERO experience in physics.

Maybe I should just buy Organic Chemistry as a second language, read the entire book during the interlude between spring and summer term, and then take organic.

I find chemistry appeals to my intuition more than math. The latter part of calc 2 really overwhelmed me.

If it's true that organic chemistry is more about hard work than innate abilities, then perhaps it is the better choice.

So far we're leaning towards organic, hehe.

Well, it's official.

I just ordered Organic Chemistry as a Second Language: First Semester Topics

(hopefully the right version??) http://www.amazon.com/Organic-Chemi...040X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1333682507&sr=8-1

Thank you all for your contributions. I have decided that since chemistry is still going to be fresh on my mind from Gen Chem 2, I am going to go with organic. I am better at chemistry than math, and I have zero background in physics, so I feel comfortable with my decision.

Hopefully this Organic as a Second Language book is as good as you folks make it out to be. I'm going to try and digest it in about a week in the interlude between spring and summer term. I am pretty excited to take O-chem, to be honest.

Wish me luck!

Thanks!

UPDATE:

Just got done with the first 4 week term of O-chem 1. I got a B+. It was pretty intense - the tests were all multiple choice. but that doesn't mean they were easy. No chance for partial credit. A fair amount of people seem to get As (22%ish).

I start O-chem 2 on Monday. Although I am happy with my grade (I studied my f*** ass off the last four weeks for that B+! A lot of info!), I would like to get an A- in Orgo 2.

Is Orgo 2 a lot harder? What sort of things should I keep in mind for the upcoming term?

B+ is pretty good... right??? : /

Also: if anyone is considering doing an accelerated O-chem class during the summer, where 10 weeks of material is condensed into 4 weeks - you better be ready to do lots of practice problems. The material isn't really difficult, as it mostly relies on simple logic and memorization, but you really have to practice and "let the electrons flow within you."

If you want to have fun, take orgo, it's much more of a joke than physics.

nah B+ really really suck cuz it count as a B. but a B in ochem is alright since it is a tough class for lots of people; and the fact that u get B+ mean you just need to work just a little harder to get the A.
