I'm sure I'm oversimplifying things but it seems to be that in regards to picking a medical field, there are two basic routes that medical students end up taking....1) The idealist that end up choosing something they love (i.e. working with kids, elderly), wanting to make a difference in the world, and 2) The ones that choose based on their future earning potentials.
Now, I'm a MSIII and I'm at the crossroads of trying to decide what I want to do for the rest of my life. I'm not making any judgements by saying what I've said above. I respect people's choices but I am curious to hear back from those that have already been through this point in their lives and are actually living with those choices that they made back as a 24/25 year old.
Are there any regrets? Are you completely satisfied with your career? The ones that choose something they love, did the idealism eventually get smoothered by the reality of practice? Or are you still loving your choice just as much as you did the first day of residency? What about the ones that chose based on "lifestyle," do you ever feel that you could've made more of a difference had you gone into another field?
I appreciate any words of wisdom... 🙂
