And by "I rank," I mean on a scale of 1 to 10 on physical appearance, with 10 being highest and 1 being lowest, where would you rank yourself in terms of physical attractiveness?

It definitely matters, even if it isn't on conscious level (which I'd bet it is at least some of the time).

Sometimes it's probably not even about how "hot" someone is - e.g. your facial structure, eyes, way in which you carry yourself, etc. subconsciously reminds a person of someone they don't like for whatever reason.

How well people on an admissions committee simply like you all-around as a person is probably a very underrated factor in the admission process (post interview). I guess it sort of falls into the realm of "luck" or "randomness" that people talk about though - especially with "top" schools.

It definitely matters on some levels. People discriminate against others based on society's idea of beauty. I doubt it matters to the point a adcom would say " Oh Him/Her no, they are far too ugly to become a doctor. 40+ Mcat and 3.8+ Gpa you say? Did you not see his/her face? No just NO."

I'm definitely a 10.

But what I think actually matters in terms of appearance is professionalism. Tattoos, piercings and gauges will hinder you. I've got long hair past my shoulders and a 6 month beard right now. I look ****ing awesome, but some adcoms would probably spit in my face if I showed for an interview looking like this.

I took it to mean more than "hotness" as well... Looking good on interview day includes dress, the way you carry yourself (healthy levels of confidence mixed with humility), etc....

43% of SDNers think they're 8/10. :eyebrow:

6/10 at best

i didn't vote but i HIGHLY doubt 60% of the people posting on this forum are 8+.

i sense some grade inflation at this institution.

I dunno 5? My mom thinks I am 10 lmao

40 % think they are an 8 lol this is complete bull ****. For anyone that thinks they are an 8 post your fugly picture on here please. Watch me treat your picture like a cow in a slaughter house.

I too highly doubt most SDN users are an "8/10" in physical appearance and could quite possibly be perceiving themselves a little too optimistically. However, I really think you need to calm down.

OP note that physical attractiveness may not always help you in admission. Like if you are 1 very ugly then adcom might sympathize with u and give u acceptance

I am confident in my research findings. Namely, being that an image of my likeness proceeded through a very rigorous peer-review process:

After review, my image was accepted for publication on hotornot.com

My abstract was also accepted for presentation on facethejury.com

Lastly, my grant for a celebrity look-a-like appears to be recommended as a melting pot mix of pierce brosnan, daniel day-lewis and oded fehr.

I mean science is science, gui's.

where's the rest of the numbers? should have done a range.

And yes it does matter.

This thread should be called:

"How to make a skewed left curve."

Misinterpreted the poll question before I voted but ah well...wish i could have contributed to the skewed curve as 80% of the time I'm a 10/10 all the time.

Same; I thought the question was "yes, it matters, and I give it an 8/10 in importance"

But for real folks, think about this way: "better looking" people generally have higher IQs. I'd say people on SDN are generally more intelligent than average. So it stands to reason that we'd be a little better looking than average, amiright?

this literally made me Lmao and my family was just looking at me like "wtf is wrong with you?"

This is a pretty good question. I just wanted to say I'm easily a dime piece, but I would have voted 7/10 if the option was there just to be somewhat modest.

I do not necessarily think a 10/10 means that you are a beautiful person. I took it more of as a indication of how well put together you are. If you are a guy, showing up clean shaven (or well groomed if you have a goatee, Van ****, etc.), appropriately matching suit and tie that is not all wrinkled and dirty looking. Shined shoes. No visible tattoos, odd piercings, crazy hair styles, etc.

To me 10/10 would mean you are just well put together, not necessarily drop dead gorgeous.

I think this is a good point. However, I don't think just being put together can get you to the top with a 10/10. I'm sure somebody can post some pics of someone who could never reach a 10 even if put together well.

Also there's no way the percent of people on this thread that are 8+ is that high. At interviews I would say at most 20% are 8+.

LMAO!!

Leave it to pre-meds to be incredibly narcissistic...

This poll is (my apologies) a complete fail.

=/ that's pretty condescending
i just didn't think that the premise of the thread was one to take seriously
also, most men would probably rate themselves around a 6. it's not of primary importance for men to be attractive since that that's not what women look at, although it's perceived to be an important characteristic in women.

The poll shows that premeds are better looking than the average population. My own experiences tell me the exact opposite. Excuse me while I go question my own reality for awhile....

This is a pointless place to poll anything related to self-esteem. every poll i've seen on here about attractiveness or getting girls/dudes has revealed that there are too many studs in this one place. yeah right... keep it real.

I'm sure physical appearance has much to do with first impression. An interviewer might look kindly on someone with a similar background or might despise them because of projection.

+1. I gave myself a 3/10 because I thought being attractive was only a 3/10 in importance. Guess I'm a fugly.

There has never been a lack of confidence on SDN. That's for sure. I imagine you would probably find the same in the physician population as a whole.

If it makes you feel any better, I'm sure all the 7's are rounding up.

I mean, Olivia Wilde was a pretty good doctor on House

Sadly I think we are all human, and the way other people look is just one of those things that influences how we feel about them, whether or not its on a conscious or unconscious level. On another level, though, there are a lot of statistics showing how a lot of other data we pick up on people from interviewing them are atually not good indicatrs of how they;l prform, so maybe the influence of attractinesss is just another indicator of how interviews ahave flaws

The intrinsic problem with 1-10 attractiveness rating scales is that nobody can decide what the curve is supposed to look like.

Technically/actually, I would imagine it's a pretty uniform distribution - centered on five, as it should be. Unfortunately, people often tend to use "grade" numbers, where an average is a seven, a six is a 'D' and anything lower than a six are fightin' words.

Yet, tell somebody they're a solid seven and instead of "oh, centrigeugle, you're so cute with the way you think I'm over one standard deviation more hot than average", you get kicked in the shins.

Combine the A-F mentality with some Lake Wobegone effect and you get:

a skewed left curve.

FWIW: I do actually think that premeds are a more attractive bunch in general, but that's probably because they're generally not overweight, and dressed nicely for the interview.

This doesn't really have much to do with the OP (being hot and tall is good everywhere, full stop) but it was a pretty stupid one to begin with.

-centrigeugle, statistically okay looking.
