Hello all,

I am looking for a portable version of Anki, which I can download to my flashdrive. When I go to the library, due to administration rights I cant download Anki and use it to make cards. I looked through google and have found multiple websites with dropbox links for Anki 2.0.44 - Portable. But the links dont seem to be working or are deleted. If anyone could provide me with a link to where I can download a portable version of Anki to a flashdrive which I can use Anki on any computer without the need for adminiatrator rights, preferably the latest version where I can use all the latest addon, I would be extremely grateful.

Thank you.

Take your computer to the library. Using other people's computers or school computers is always gonna have major drawbacks.

No no, I want to use Anki on a PC and make actual cards on the PC on a public computer. I want to use things like image occlusion to make new cards on a public computer. The computer won't let me install Anki because of administrative rights. There is a way to install a portable version to a flashlight which you can then install on any PC. Then I can use Anki with all the add-ons like image occlusion to make new cards on the public computer. Does anyone have the file already on their flash drive which they don't mind sharing through a dropbox link?

Why on earth do you want to use their crappy computers anyway? Public computers are poor quality and THEN hamstrung. The solution is not to use them. If you're in school, it's worth using your loans to get a solid laptop for yourself; it's 1000% an investment in your education and your future.

It's too big to carry around. I prefer to use the schools computer.

Maybe?

Anki Manual

On Windows, Anki can be installed on a USB / flash drive and run as a portable application. The following example assumes your USB drive is drive G.

  • Copy the \Program Files\Anki folder to the flash drive, so you have a folder like G:\Anki.

  • Create a text file called G:\anki.bat with the following text:

Cool. Well, since you prefer to use a computer with limited capabilities, including the ability to permanently save files or run your own programs, looks like you already have exactly what you want.

My school computers are actually pretty decent and I know many people who have been using a flashdrive version of Anki on public computers and it worked out for them. Anybody here have a file they would share for the latest portable Anki.

I tried that, but I don't understand how to make the file. I tried numerous times and it hasn't worked. If anyone already has it on their flash drive or knows how to make the file, can you please make the file for me. I would be very grateful.

Worked perfectly well for me...make sure that you're changing the text that they give you to reflect the actual drive address. For example, my computer sees my thumbdrive as "D" drive, so I had to use

d:\anki\anki.exe -b d:\ankidata

This is also why we can't really make this file for you; you have to see what address the computer is placing your drive at and make the .bat file accordingly.
All you have to do to make the text file is open Notepad, paste in the code from the website, and update the drive letter to the one the computer is using for your thumbdrive. Then, make sure it saves the file "Anki.bat" to the same drive you've got the Anki folder on.

Will this allow me to use Anki on any computer?

The name of the text file should have the name of the drive or should it be just Anki.bat?

Basically, what I am saying is do I name the text file,

d:\anki.bat

Or

anki.bat

Also do I put text file inside the Anki folder I just created or do I put it inside the d drive with the Anki folder.

Finally what do I click on in the flash drive to get Anki started?

I apologized for asking so many questions. I am not literate when it comes to programming.

If you save the file on a computer as D:\anki.bat, what it will do is go to the D drive and place your file there, then name it anki.bat. This can be kind of a pain to do, because computers don't like putting :\ into file names because they KNOW that doing so will relocate the file. You can do this from the Save As function in Notepad (that's how I did it), but you can't rename it that from the regular file explorer, so if you're having trouble saving a file as d:\anki.bat, you can try just naming it anki.bat and moving it into the correct place.

As for whether it will work for every computer, well...it will work from any computer that assigns your drive the D:\ address (or whatever you see when you plug yours in on your school computer). Odds are, the default handling of thumbdrives is the same on all of your school's computers, but you may hit an oddball here or there. All you have to do at that point is go into the anki.bat file and replace all of the 'd's with whatever letter your thumbdrive is assigned to on that computer, save, and then click on it as per usual.

In order to know which drive letter to use to begin with, put your thumb drive in the school computer, go to My Computer, and you will see your drive in there as "MyUSBdrive (D🙂". That letter, whatever it is, is the one you need to be using in your anki.bat file.

When it's all setup properly, you click on the anki.bat file to launch Anki. This will be found in your thumbdrive folder.
