Does anybody know how difficult it is to get an IM residency in Portland Oregon.... disregarding OHSU in your answer? I have heard from my school that the community programs are not that difficult to get into but I have recently heard that they are very competitive. So which is it?

Sorry I don't have a real answer for you, but I can tell you from my experience as a PA student in '98-00 there were PLENTY of IM residents in the Providence and Legacy programs. Many of them taught for us and were great. As far as competitiveness...dunno, but Portland is a lovely city, and so far still fairly unappreciated outside of the NW.
Good luck
Lisa

Thanks for the reply. Let's just hope it stays unappreciated so people don't ruin it (I was born in oregon and had to go out of state for School). I can't wait to get home.

No kidding...I'm in rural SC right now with Hanna coming in...home sounds pretty good to me too!

Ouch... sounds scary. My nightmare is 100+ degree weather in the Inland Empire (60 miles east of L.A.) with heavy smog and a disgustingly filthy environment. I have never missed rain so much.

Compared to other West coast community programs, I don't think Vincent/Emanuel or Legacy/Good Samaritan are particularly competitive for US grads. They are selective but not competitive. Residents are happy, faculty are friendly, but your exposure to tertiary care cases is limited (many get transferred to OHSU or Providence). I don't think Vincent filled all their slots the year that I applied. In contrast, I think Providence is somewhat more competitive than many other community centers. I think they have a true chief resident, a good IT system, and you will see more complex cases. And a 100% IM board pass rate for the past 15 years which they mention about q10 minutes. Hope this helps.

I went to OHSU for med school and have a modest amount of insight having done some rotations though these systems, although I did not interview at any of them for residency. No doubt some would disagree, but IIRC the general consensus is that Providence Portland is the best community IM program in town, followed by Providence St. Vincent's, distantly followed by the Legacy Emanuel and Legacy Good Sam programs. The Providence hospitals are legit tertiary centers with high volume and complicated referrals. I think the relative competitiveness is in keeping with this. For whatever it's worth and whatever it means to you, I don't recall there being many (any?) FMGs in the Providence system, but many FMGs at Legacy.
The other non-university residency option in Portland is the Providence Milwaukie family medicine residency, if location is a must and FM is conceivable for you. I think it's a relatively new program, and I imagine it would not be particularly competitive.
