All right, here it goes. I know I may be about to open Pandora's box here but I was not able to find anything about it in the archives. Would it be a bad professional move to pose for Playboy? Sounds like a stupid question when I ask it that way!! The obvious answer, I feel, is yes. I wonder if ADCOMS automatically check for this? I’m just looking at it as a way to make some cash, considering the mountain of debt I am about to acquire, but I would never dream of doing it if it could potentially come back to bite me in the behind (no pun intended there!) Anyone wanna add their .02? Thanks guys!

damn what school are you applying to? I can still add some before AADSAS closes up. On a side note, it would not be such a wise move, at least in professional sense. In my mind, you are my favorite SDN member.

You're asking a internets forum full of turbonerds whether you should or shouldn't get naked? 😛

I'd ask your schools pre-dent advisor, they might know better how to handle this. One thing to realize though is that if you do pose, a simple google search of your name probaby would turn up a big pile playboy propaganda.

My advice? Try to get an acceptance beforehand, but I wouldn't worry about it too much. All publicity is good publicity 😉

 there's already requests for pics

must be hott, any pics?

I predict a high number of hits for this, and many opinions. The two times you see insane number of replies are when girls asks something like this or when some1 said they got caught cheating, and got sent to dean, and asking people for advice. keep on coming!

post your pics and i will tell you whether or not to pose for playboy. 😉

Don't do it. Professionally speaking you would never recover. It's bad enough that you are an attractive female (people assume because you are pretty, you must also be stupid) but pile upon that a playboy spread... no wife will ever let her husband go to you!

Seriously, this thread can't continue unless you post some pics. It doesn't have to be a bikini photo or anything. Just a plain picture of you.

Nevermind getting INTO dental school, once you start practicing, you're probably going to get a lot of trouble/inappropriate remarks from patients who have seen your photos. What if they bring the photos into your practice? That could be uncomfortable or embarrasing for you. Also, magazines like Playboy are offensive to some - you don't want to offend potential patients.

Although I'm all for intelligent women in Playboy, I don't think it would be wise to have your name associated with something like Playboy just because you're choosing a career where you will be highly accessible and your name will be your brand.

There are other options, similar to Playboy, where your face wouldn't be shown (ie masks) but you probably wouldn't make as much money from it.

I guess I need more details to answer your question. First of all, I'd like a picture of you. 😉 But seriously, have they made you an offer? If so, how much is it? Also, do you have to use your real name?

I don't think ADCOMS specifically check for stuff like this. But I wouldn't be surprised if they google people's names.

I personally see no problem with women or men posing for nude pictures. As long as it's somewhat tasteful; which playboy generally is.

I think you should do it.

see the quote below... 🙂

I have an MD friend who told me this: He had a classmate who was posing for some magazine WHILE she was in med school... and some students knew about it and were laughing and making fun of her etc. she was just doing it to pay her bills and quit when she graduated. In the end, she supposedly was way ahead of her classmates, b/c she wasn't deep in debt by the time she got out practicing.

I'd say DO IT! You may make more than enough money to pay for school. IMO, I don't feel it would be professional suicide. Have you ever heard the phrase "There's no such thing as bad publicity." It's not like you would be hanging the cover in your office.

If I had to choose between two equally qualified individuals for a dentist, or orthodontist, and one was a John or Jane Doe and one was a smoking hot woman...hmmm, I wonder which one I would go with. If you got it, flaunt it!

The one factor I would be concerned about is how much? $10,000 & I would say no way. Upwards of $50k, don't be stupid.

imagine a patient trying to locate your clinic, so they google it and all of a sudden they get the clinic's address with a couple pics of you..i dont think i would want a playboy mate operating on me !!...but i definately would like a study partner like you !!

OK, first I do not deem myself on moral high-ground with this response. But to me, I would say no. Don't expose yourself for the world to see. If you are a beautiful woman, then you will be so without having to take your clothes off. It is true that beauty helps out in all facets of life, but discretion is advised.

Of course, if you are comfortable with your patients, colleagues, and fellow classmates undressing you with their eyes then I say it is your decision. It won't ruin your life, but it could make you a little uneasy and cause some separation between you and some of your classmates.

Many girls/women can be ruthless and if some insecure female finds out you posed for playboy and she already feels threatened by you because of your beauty, imagine what that could cause.

Of course, some of my argument is hypothetical, and perhaps by being a centerfold, you would attract some more patients and you could use it in your marketing.

First of all... everyone is asking/saying the wrong thing... the real question is WHERE ARE YOU APPLYING?! Please say UF... you're from florida right? Wanna be my lab partner, haha just kidding around. Anyway, i say go for it... if it'll help you get out of debt... it's worth it. I just wouldn't write a personal statement about it or anything, haha. I highly doubt that the adcoms would automatically find out from a google search... when i type in my name some football player comes up for the first 100 pages. Hell, I'd give it a go if i had that offer... i'd much rather be almost debt free than 200+ grand in the hole.

This really reminds me of an episode of Grey's Anatomy. In this episode, Izzie (sp?), who was a model during med school, attempted treating a patient that had seen her picture wearing a swimsuit or underwear in a magazine. The patient immediately recognized her, and he would not let her work on him.

I think it's just a respect thing. If you pose nude in Playboy, respect will not be given to you. As a dentist, you should be very well respected by your patients and community.

Well, actually the patient didn't want Izzy working on him because he had some type of sexual dysfunction (prostate problems or something) and was embarrassed.

Hmmm.... How to state this diplomatically... Dont do it. Its porno for goodness sakes! PORNO! Do you really want to have that hanging over you for years and years? You want kids and loved ones to find out about that? How selfish! Think about your folks, think about the rest of the family and the shame you will bring on them for selling yourself so some geek perv can drool over you.
Ok, dental school is expensive, but you are going to be a dentist for crying out loud. They make pretty good money last time I checked. And do you really think that you will get enough money from the porno mag to get through dental school without taking a loan? You are nuts sister. Do the right thing, keep your clothes on, DONT post a picture, take a loan or talk to the military if you need the cash.

And you are married!!! WTF!!! I'd say you had pretty good reason to worry about someone finding out. If I were an adcom and I knew you were married and taking your clothes off so that dudes could gawk at you for money, I wouldnt let you into my school, no way. If you do decided to do it, I would advise you to keep that under really tight wraps. But that is just my 2 cents. Forgive the harsh tone, I just think it is a really bad idea.

This is a tricky question. If you plan on being a cosmetic dentist in Hollywood or some other wealthy community, then being a former playboy pinup might give your career a boost.

My brain says no, but other parts of me are pointing to yes.

Let me be the first to say that you won't get into dental school or med school if you do this.

but, DUHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

She hasn't responded since the initial post?

Playboy's about as tasteful as it gets. Do it. Some people will judge you because they're jealous of your scorching hotness, but unless you're trying to start up some family practice deep in the bible belt nobody will think twice about it when the time comes for you to practice.

you probably have a slight problem with it yourself if you're asking other people what they think. if you do it, you're going to worry about it backfiring for the rest of your career but if you don't do it, you won't have it lingering in the back of your mind. plus, what's the point of a few thousand now if it could jeopardize your future cash flow when you're making upwards of $100,000/yr?

if you're hot, then it's a go.

if not then it'll only hurt your chances

I disagree. I am suspicious of any "successful" hot chick based on past observations. The hottest chick in my dental school class was the biggest ******* ever, but she did well because she flaunted her store-bought titties in front of all the male faculty. The quality of her work was well below others getting similar grades.....all because she flirted for her grades. I have seen this phenomenon in med school as well.

I am suspicious of "successful" people with alternate methods of gain. Especially if it includes whoring.

I completely agree with this statement. It is sad but true that this happens. I was trying to say all other things being equal (i.e. similar work quality, happy patients, etc.) who would you pick? The hot one, right?
