For those of you going out of state or to private schools that cost big bucks what are your thoughts on being 250-300,000 in debt. I think my best shot right now it out of state so I'm trying to decide whether most people would go ahead and take any acceptance or apply next year at another opportunity for instate. I applied late kinda late and was told by admissions at my state school that i would have trouble getting in this year because by the second round of interviews all but 5-10 instate spots are full. I was also told that my chances would be pretty good if i applied again next year EARLY. Thoughts anyone.

it depends on your age:

if you are young (21 or 22...even 23) then go ahead and accept their offer provided that you like their school. you will have many years to pay back hefty dept and yet adopt a quality lifestyle in your 30s....for instance, if you're 22, then you'd graduate at 26...so by the time you're in your 30s will have paid back a good chunck of it.

but if you are older (>25) then you may wanna think twice before you borrow all that money. for instance, if you're 26 and accepted the offer, then you'd graduate at the age of 30 with a 300,000$ dept on your shoulders. this may undermine the quality of your lifestyle significantly.

on the other hand, if you are older, you may wanna get in cus you dont wanna graduate even older....which may be worth the sacrifice, provided that you dont have outstanding loans from undergrad or other grad schools you went to.

hope that helped....

Take whatever you can get this year and go there! The competition may go up again next year and by going this year you will be out and making money one year earlier.

i know i had trouble deciding bt pitt and penn. after adding all the fees and tuition the difference was less than 80k. this is most likely less than what you'll be making in a year as a dentist, so why not just go to the more expensive one rather than miss out on a year of great pay? that is unless your in-state is WAY cheaper than out of state or private and a year of work wouldnt make up the difference.

I believe the saying goes “A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush”.

Good luck!
