Hey all,

I was attending a cc when I was admitted late (as a freshman) into a state university nearby. After signing up for courses at the university, I dropped all my cc courses but one PE course because it gave access to a gym that was closer than the university's. The only possible negative aspect that I saw was that I had to attend the gym for a minimum number of hours. I also (stupidly) assumed that since the PE course was noted as "open entry/open exit" in the cc's course catalog, I could drop it anytime throughout the academic term. I was wrong.

After work and and taking on a hefty course load (and two months), I found that I couldn't attend the cc's gym because it closed relatively early. I tried calling the registrar's office at the cc, but it was too late. I found out that the course was treated like any other at the cc, and it was past the final drop date. This left me in my current situation, where my options are to try and pass the course by ditching every after school activity (e.g. evening review sessions for the upcoming finals) and not go to work on Saturdays in order to work out, or not work out at all and accept the inevitable fail. I have already contacted the instructor of the course, but no avail.

Basically, I just wanted to know how medical schools would see a "Fail" in a pass/fail course for physical education in an application (should I take the latter option). Would it be something that needed explaining? Would they factor it into their view of an applicant's academic prowess? Or would they not care much about it (provided that the applicant has a great univ. GPA)?

Any responses would be much appreciated!

Failing a course should never be an option. Obviously this isn't failing ochem but it will still require explaining. You should do what you must to pass. Your academic record at this pt is far more critical than your ECs the next couple of weeks. You may have to study while working out if that's what it takes...

Your explanation is pretty problematic and it reflects very negatively on your decision making process - I would hate to offer that explanation to anybody, much less a med school adcom.

You need to do whatever it takes to get the P. No excuses.

Thanks for the responses and the perspective. I'll definitely get on it.

If there's still a chance of passing, then do what you have to. Poor time management is not an excuse that will help you. Being very busy and succeeding at everything is what adcomms expect to see. Check to see if the gym is open at 5 am or Sundays. Go during luch time. Trade work hours for another time. Don't ditch the review sessions, though since a high GPA is your highest priority.

The good news: P/F classes, even if flunked, have no impact on your application GPA with AMCAS.
