Possible recession affecting your decision?

Any dental students or practicing dentists taking into consideration post-grad due to a sluggish economy?

I've always heard that slow economies create more interest in graduate school, I want to know if any of you are changing what you thought about doing because of economic predictions.

Things are OK now, but what about 6 months... 1 year? I had to turn off NPR today because I just could not stand to listen to what the analysts are saying....

Modern recesions only last at most 16 months, and the federal government controls interest rates. It wouldn't make sense to increase them when the economy is slumping. The fed dropped the rate by 3/4% last week.

Seeing how so far the so called "recession" hasn't hit any dentists I know of in a couple of different states, I am not too worried about it. My conspiracy theory is that the media is trying to push this idea so we won't vote republican. Don't listen to them, and vote for Mitt and the economy will be fine. 😉

I love it when we American sneezes and the whole world get sick, too! The ridiculously inflated housing prices need to go down. The arrogant, bloated unions need to slim down as suffering companies layoff their overpaid union workers to better compete. We are all slaves of OPEC until there's a recession to bring oil demand down and the hopefully price of oil down.

Recessions like someone else said will come and go about every 8-10 years, and 1000's of other dentists just like yourself have survived and will survive them. If a patient is sufferring an excrutiating toothache they won't hesitate to find a dentist. Elective care could suffer but those choosing to get this done are not usually the hardest hit during a recession and will be able to still get this done if they so choose. I don't think Romney is the best choice out there for President but anything is better than that loon Obama!

In hard economic times, you'll simply find a better way to adapt and compete. I went nuts yesterday seeing eight walk-ins in addition to my regularly scheduled patients; it resulted in an extra couple grand for three root canals and a crown next week. I didn't want to and I hated seeing these patients but I figured I needed to work harder to hedge against the recession. My collection just this month alone is already four times ahead of last year, so I am all set to absorb a complete 3 months loss of business and still come out with the same income at the end of 2008.

I personally have a hard time with the republicans, but thats mostly due to their foreign policy and hawkish views on global affairs. But we're not going to have that debate on sdn. I'm talking about national policies, what specifically attracts most people on dental sdn to republicans?

I think that pretty much sums it up.

I also think that dentists now and historically have personalities that tend towards autonomy. That personality seems to fit better with the theoretical stance of republicans - dentists would rather not have the government telling them what to do.

Wait, did we just time travel backwards 50 years? Seems these days the republican party isn't fiscally or socially conservative, don't give 3 craps about states rights and prefer to control every aspect of our lives they can.

I'm sorry, I guess I should've said "in theory" the republican party would probably be more attractive to the "stereotypical" personality of dentists now and in the past. Does that help?

Ron Paul (and possibly Mitt Romney) is about the only remotely true Republican candidate I have seen in a long, long while. He actually lives by the constitution, not some fanciful interpretation of it like all of the Democratic candidates and some of the other Republican candidates.

I think the whole universal health care idea (way too close to socialized medicine seen in Great Britain) scares a lot of dentists away from voting for the democratic party. I can tell you that as a dentist, I will be staying far away from both Hillary and Obama for many reasons, but this specific reason ranks right up there. But, to each their own.... I just want some security that I don't have a fixed income in the future.

As far as the whole recession question, I don't think dentistry would be effected much as previous posters have mentioned... I know that parents will always pay for their children to have straight teeth and attractive smiles.... I hope....
