possible to go into private practice first then back into academia?

Not sure which forum to put this under but the residency forum seemed most relevant. I was wondering how easy would it be to start in private practice and then go back into academia? I was figuring to pay off my loans and start a family during private practice. Then once alot of the financial burden had been lifted, I'd go back into academia which is what I really want to do. Would such a transition be doable?
