I am a 3rd year psych resident, wondering if it is possible to join the navy or air force at this point. I know they recruit med students, and practicing physicians, but what about residents? Can anyone tell me? Thanks!

Yes, they do. Check out the stickies above for "FAP." You get a stipend of about $2K/month plus $45K/year annually. After residency, you'll owe one year of active duty service for every year you took benefits plus. Not sure if they'll give it for psych. The list of which specialties qualify is up to the needs of each service, so you'll have to inquire.

If you're interested in part-time service instead of full-time service, the branches also each have options. There are also student loan repayment schemes. I went the part-time route and am very happy with my experience so far as a resident. Feel free to PM with details.

I was interested in doing something along this route so I could do a civilian residency. I'm a MS0, not interested in the HSPS, looking into navy.

If I were to do something like general surgery, would I be required to do 5-6 years of active duty? Could you take 2 years of benefits and do 2 years of active duty + join the reserve (I read on the website the minimum is 2 years)? What are the options. I would rather not talk to a recruiter [yet] if possible.
