Hi everyone,

I apologize for the potentially stupid question. I'm wondering for a given average applicant, between OBGYN and pediatrics which one would be harder to match into?

OB/Gyn. Its definitely more competitive than pedes.

AOA or ACGME? If you're trying to get into the 12(?) peds AOA programs, good luck. Other than that, OBGYN is harder.

If you are in the position where the answer to this question matters, you probably better apply broadly to both. If you are actually "a given average applicant" you probably will get into something in either, and the issue of respective competitiveness shouldn't impact you.

Thanks guys. I'm not actually picking between the two. My friend and I are going into these two specialties and there was a debate. But I guess everything just depends on the situation, which is why it was a bad question. Thanks for the replies though.

Just whip them both out on the counter and see whose is bigger. This kind of debate is silly and immature. Neither are in the upper echelon of competitiveness, both can be be the right career for the right person. At this stage of the game it's not about competitiveness, it's about what you want to do in life for the next 40+ years. The days of needing to do the most competitive path should have ended as a premed -- now it's about career satisfaction, which incorporates lots of components other than competitiveness/prestige.
