Hey everyone. so as many of of are about to or have just taken the boards I was wondering what advice you had for us first years who are done with the year and have a summer break. because i'm doing research going "relaxing" on some exotic beach is not really an option. what sorts of study techs and materials would you recommend to get a good start for the boards.

thnx alot!!!

Forget the studying! Focus on the research - get a paper published (or 2). If you decide to apply to a competitive residency, it will help you immensely.

I'm strongly considering radiology. Since I had to waste last summer doing Army stuff, I now have to figure out a way to fit research into my schedule in order to even have a shot at getting in

there is no need to "review" anything over summmer that you did LEARN because it is true you review virtually everything second year in the context of path/medicine- btw be sure to review physio/histo along while your doing path next year as it helpts to tie things together. BUT if there is a subject you feel like you didnt learn, and you can tell, for me it was neuro and biochem. my first semester between getting adjusted and having so many classes i honestly learned nothing in neuro but some how got by and same with biochem so i spent a good chunk of time learning those 2 things over summer because you do not have time to learn anything new 2nd year on top of all the thigns you have to learn. with that said you do have time to review things you have learned if that makes senes. if you are planning on not caring about a step 1 score other than passing, i wouldnt worry about it because your 2nd year classes alone will pass you through the boards. good luck and enjoy summer

Best advice i would give is this...

If you don't already have First Aid, buy it now!!
As you are going through your classes during 2nd year, write down notes, important tidbits, mnemonics, etc. in the margins. I did this with BRS Path thoughout the year and it has helped a lot. I wish I had done it with FA instead (mostly cuz of the pharm).

I wish someone had told me that!

Thanks. that is a good idea.

I really hate it when people tell you NOT to study yet for the boards. Call me gunner/loser/nerd/whatever, but I bought BRS path, BRS physio, pharm recall, and FA during first year. Whatever topic we covered, I made sure I read the relevant topics in the review books. I hardly every opened Big Robbins. Its a great book with nice drawings/path slides but time is important and I want the most bang for my time. I want it quick and I want it dirty! BRS path offers just that. In fact, I'm beginning to fall in love with my BRS path book (damn...I need to get out more).

In conclusion, use these books as much as you can for your classes. In 2 years time when it's time to study for boards, you will be far ahead of your classmates who are waiting in line at the bookstore to get their fresh copy of FA, BRS's, and HY's. Step 1 here I come!

Pharm recall, eh? What exactly are you "recalling"? Does it have an entry for Vitamin H?

Not quite sure I understand you. PCOM is a systems-based curriculum and we've already finished cardiovascular and renal/pulmonary medicine....so we've already done the path, pharm, physio, and micro for the respective systems. I used FA pharm and Pharm Recall for the pharm lectures.

What's the point of your post?

👍 , I wish I would've used first aid sooner. I've had the Jan 2005 when it first came out, 6 months later and many times threw it, I still don't know it all, and my test is in 5 days. 😱

I would strongly agree with taking a break....but if you're going to study take a day or 2 and look over the micro in 1st AID. It has been the only thing from first year that has been hard to regain
