Hi folks,

I am about to start residency in June. I was Navy HPSP, completed my payback, and matched into a civilian residency in March. Already out of the Navy and just waiting for residency to start.

I plan on using the post 9/11 GI bill for the BAH during residency (I do not have Montgomery as I waived it). I just want to make sure I’m doing all the right steps to ensure I start getting paid my bah on time.

I got my certificate of eligibility from the VA. I sent that to my programs financial aid office (it’s part of the associated medical school) and they had me complete a form. They told me they would officially submit my paperwork in June to be “certified”. Is there anything else I need to do other than check back in with them in June? Or once they submit their stuff, is that all is needed for me to start receiving my BAH in July?

As long as they have the certificate of eligibility (usually the designated VA benefits liaison for the school is within the business/financial department) then that's fine as far as the department is concerned. To prevent delay though, you should have the residency program director certify your full-time status to the liaison appointee every 30 days ONCE you start the program to prevent disruption of BAH. Most established residency programs (unlike mine) will already have this planned in advance, so just make sure both liaison and director are on the same page.
