hi
Since some of us have already got their acceptances. I want to start this thread for those who have to secure F1 visa. I have B1/B2 visa right now. I want to know if I should apply for change of status in US or go back home. I am interested in changing status here. Please share your experiece.

Hi,
Congratulations! Where have you been accepted?
In my opinion, and not only, it is recommended to change your status IN THE US! It is easier and less time consuming. When I came here, I had B1/B2 visa but I found a school and in almost 2 MONTHS I changed it into an F-1 visa. Now I have this student visa and I can transfer anytime to any school (college, university).
Hope my input cleared up your concerns.
All the best with FTID program! :luck:

Hi
Thanks for your input. I am also thinking to change my status here. 👍SDN. I got into BU.

I dunno when did DDS1 change his status in the states, I believe the law changed recently, I heard that from a friend...

Apparently you have to wait 3 month before you are eligible for a change of visa, and for an F1 visa it is recommnded to apply 3 month at least before the program, but entries are usually not more than 6 month for a b1/b2!

So it is like indirectly saying you need to get back home and change it there!

Ask a lawyer... they know what's best for you!

BU start the program on August. They will start processing the i-20 by the end of March. So you have to make sure you are not over stay, because b1/b2 status only allow you to stay for maximum 6 months - some is 1 month from entry date stamp on the i-94 card (look also on the stamp for stay allowance - I know sometimes they gave a month, 3 or 6 months).

I think Samyred is right. The us immigration law keep changing after 911. It is better to ask some one who is expert on this. Good luck.

You are right. Chances of changing status from B1/B2 are low when you apply immediately after entering US as consular might assume that your actual intention of coming to US was to secure F1 visa and you lied at the port of entry, but chances are better if you apply late like you said atleast after 3 months of entering US. My I-94 is valid till the end of march, so if BU can issue me I-20 before that I can apply for change of status before visa expiration.

It would be helpful for people already in the school who already went thru this process, to provide some info on this...

I am already on F1...
and am on OPT...

Any suggestions?

Any input.. greatly appreciated...

Nice thread....👍
