Hi,

I have been granted an opportunity to be enrolled into Navy's 4 year HPSP, and I just wanted to ask any of you who will/have gone through the process that I am thinking of..

I am interested in becoming a specialist after graduating from dental school, and probably would not prefer to join the military residency programs.

My plans as of now is this: 4 years dental school -> 4 years active duty as Navy GP -> Apply to civilian residency program while in IRR.

I think the experience that I get from working as a GP in the military is a good experience and probably would be looked at favorably, the only concern that I have is the actual application process.

We need to have recommendation letters from faculties from the dental school we attended, right? Would it be difficult to go through the specialist application process after serving in the military for 4 years?

Thanks for reading, and I hope to get some helpful replies!

If you join the military you will have 4 years to figure this all out. Plenty of people have gotten into civilian residencies after completing their commitments. Residency will take into consideration who your LORs come from based on your experience. Best of luck.

Thank you for your reply. So there isn't strict requirement of LORs from dental school faculties?

of the 10 or so people i can name off the top of my head who left the military to go directly into residency very few had letters from faculty. at the most they may have had one letter from a dental school faculty. hope this helps

Thank you so much.
