Hey guys.

Last time I posted a thread about my stats and wanting to clean up my academic mess. I am taking classes as an open university student at CSU fullerton and I would need some suggestions before I register for fall classes.

I am taking human physiology for summer session right now and I looked at the fall schedule. Pretty much all the classes there are with labs. I was wondering if I could just take the lecture portion (if they allow me)? Classes that I see that will help me are general microbio and immunology. I don't know if stem cell classes will help... Other than bio classes, can I take chem classes to raise my stat? If nothing other than microbio and immunology helps, should I just try UCI for their open university?

Thank you. I'm freaking out right now =(

From what I understand, you must take both lecture and lab courses at the university. Any upper division science class will make your application look stronger, just don't bite off more than you can chew.

Physiology is a good class to really show the adcoms you can handle a tough class. Because you're only taking that one class this summer, make sure to stack the science courses at CSU Fullerton when you start registering in the fall. Remember, admission committees want to know that you'll be able to handle the rigors of dental school. Having 16 units of upper division science courses and doing well in them will look great on your application.

If you can, try and enroll and finish your classes at UCI. I believe their lectures and labs are separate from each other. If you've already satisfied your lab requirements, it'll make more sense to just take the lecture courses so you don't have to worry about the lab portion taking away from your study time.

well sadly, from uci's website I couldn't find out if they have open university. I have finished all my pre-reqs already. Classes like microbio isn't pre-reqs, do I still have to take the lab portion of it? Ya 16 units is my goal, but I dont think I can handle 16 units of classes with labs.

Microbiology will be a good class to take. It is considered a pre-req at some schools (ex. UMich). If you've already completed your lab requirements, you don't have to take any more labs. The lecture class itself will be sufficient. Also, molecular biology, cell biology, metabolic and structural biochemistry, and anatomy are all classes you could look into.

in post-bacc, I didn't take the lab stuffs, I only took the upper level bio classes. There were labs offered, I just didn't care to take them, the school was okay with that (they don't encourage it, but w/e I didn't care)

The microbio and immunology are great, step cell stuffs, I dunno, probably a good class to raise the sGPA, other than that, you might wanna try your luck at another school, seems like ur current one doesn't offer many upper bios.

Hm... even though my dream school is UCLA, UCSF, and Columbia, I'll take whatever I can get in. In a situation like this how should I pick my classes and lab? the school i'm in now only offers some stem cell class and microbio and immunology. If I can't fill 16 units (with or without labs), should I look into another school that has more classes for me to take so I can take 16 units?

You should look at a different school...what are you going to do after the fall semester anyways if they have no more bio classes?

I was thinking of taking stem cell, microbio, and immunology for fall and then check if spring has any other useful classes. If not I'll go to another school. What I'm worrying about right now is that 1. can I take chem classes (like biochem) and 2. What if I can't get 16 units in a semester (like only 12-13 with stem cell, microbio, and immunology). It sucks that lecture is only 3 units and lab is 1 when lab is usually harder than lecture....
