anyone ever tried doing a post bac in eng classes to boost up their gpa and in the mean time for a couple of years make a decent living with starting pay of 50k/yr? I know eng classes may not be in the sci field but they are considered upper level courses. let me know if this would be a good option or just take sci courses 🙄

I have not done that.

It doubt it will affect you negatively, but prepared to explain why you did it in an interview. I am not sure it will affect you all that much positively unless it really raises your GPA, but it of course will not raise your science GPA, which is what most schools base their decisions from.

Do it if you enjoy it, sounds like you will make good money in the meantime. I would not postpone your applications for it though. 50k now is not better than 150K you are missing out on after graduation if you putt it off.

Talk to Sprgrover. He did a lot of extra classes in the arts . . . he could shed some light on what he was asked about it in interviews.

Based on my experiences as an engineering major, I've realized dental schools liked my engineering background.
The good think about a degree in engineering is, if you decide no to go to dental school, you can at least get a job as an engineer. On the other hand, the engineering classes do not help you in dental school as much as advanced biosciences (anatomy, physiology and pathology) classes. If you think you can raise your GPA and you have the time for it, go for it. Also, not everyone is able to handle engineering classes, so you have an edge, and you can use your knowledge in dental research.

Please be more specific as far as what year you are and what your plans are.

Yes i was planning on doing a back-up type of thing and a way to pay for dental school with the extra money by becoming an engineer. But yea its probably better to take more upper lever sci courses and I plan on taking the DAT this June. Upper division sci courses are graduate level (5000+) or can i take coureses in the 4000 range since i wont have to pay the grad/credit price. thx guys for the info 🙂

If you are taking the DAT this June, then I assume you are applying this cycle with your current GPA. Taking new classes does not reflect on your GPA for this cycle.

Just do well on the DAT to make up for your GPA.

In your case, I would suggest taking more 4000 range sci courses, so you do not have to pay the extra price and it might be easier to get a better grade.
Good Luck

I certainly wouldn't take engineering classes for the reason of making 50k as a way of paying for dental school. I am an engineer making ~50k and it is harder to save money then you might think. Once you take out taxes and living expenses, if you save 15k by being a tight wad, I don't think it is enough money to make much of a dent on paying for school. I have been working at a company for 8 months now-just got a raise-yeah! But I haven't saved very much money even though I am a cheap skate if that is a word...I actually like my job, have lots of responsibilities, etc., so sometimes - i know it is blasphemy - i start questioning if i want even go to dental school, but i try to remember that I have always wanted to be a dentist, and i get to choose where i live, work w/ people, yada yada and get remotivated. I guess another reason I start to have doubts is b/c after 4 years of engineering I was burnt out from school, anyways, i don't know why i am rambling....just a hard decision when you already have good career opportunities 🙄

yea i have a 3.1 gpa so i need to hit 20aa at least to get into some of the dental schools like nyu or boston. :scared:

With your GPA, I would aim for a 22 or more on your DAT. Take the Kaplan DAT class and apply early.

Have you graduated yet? What year are you in?

Moni is right on Money. When you start making money, you can hardly save. Also, makig 50K a year will impact your financial aid eligibility.
